As Edwin Star once asked, “War, What is it good for?” Many ask a similar question. Why did the U.S. go into this war? The official purpose for the United States to enter into the Vietnam War was to stop the spread of communism. The youth of the U.S. of A. traveled far away to fight and die on foreign ground in defense of our freedom. If the soldier had not gone to battle, would we still have freedom in a communist dominated society? It was the soldier, not the (insert writer, reporter, protester, or lawyer here), that let us have (freedom of –insert speech, press, demonstration, or fair trial here-), right? Some say that we could have done without war and nobody would have died, but what of the future – would there be more death there? The fact remains that our men went over seas to fight in a war that ended in a stalemate. To my surprise, it is commonly viewed as a failure to assert use power today and not a stalemate. In my opinion, it is unnecessary to protest about people who are defending your right to protest. After all, it was the soldier that allowed freedom of speech, not the protester.
