Picture

She found his photograph in her purse
She had meant to throw it away
like he had done to her

With a quick nervous glance she tried to discover
if her new boyfriend had noticed
He would go into a rage if he saw
It wasn’t her fault but that wouldn’t matter

Men had always had control over her life
It wasn’t how she wanted it
but it was like she had traded herself
in hopes of feeling loved

Once she was satisfied that her new boy friend
wasn’t paying attention
She looked down at the picture of her former lover
and remembered a sweet moment they had once shared

Maybe, that’s all there was, she thought
A few precious moments
in a sea of sadness
She began to cry

Her new boyfriend looked over and said
“What the fuck is your problem”?

Sorry, she replied

And she was sorry
That she lived in a world of such men
and even more so because she felt
she needed them to survive
