The Funks 2000 Part Two

The Funks December 1978
Dory & Terry Funk, December 1978

Back in June, I wrote, "Two brothers have two different ways. They are really in contrast to each other. However, I really hope this parallel line will join again at the end of the century or the start of the 2000's" in "The Funks 2000" (June 28, 1999). The time when the parallel joins will come true earlier than we have expected.

The Funks (Dory Funk Jr. and Terry Funk), as a tag team, will return to Japan after eight years and seven months' absence. They are one of the greatest and most popular tag teams in Japanese wrestling history. Plus, they were the prime movers in letting me become captivated by wrestling. They will appear on FMW's 10th anniversary show, Entertainment Wrestling Special Live, with Shawn Michaels (special referee) and ECW's Tommy Dreamer & Raven at Yokohama Arena (17,000 seats) in Kanagawa on Tuesday, November 23 (Japanese Labor Thanksgiving Day).

Dory and Terry have rarely wrestled together in both the United States and Japan recently. To the best of my memory, the last time they wrestled as a tag team in Japan was against Cactus Jack (Mick Foley) & Texas Terminator Hoss at Osaka Furitsu Gym on April 6, 1991 (12:22 Dory beat Cactus). And, Terry managed Dory, Giant Baba, and Stan Hansen against Andre the Giant, Jumbo Tsuruta, and Terry Gordy in a six-man tag team match on All Japan Pro's 20th Anniversary show at Nippon Budokan in Tokyo on October 20, 1992. Then, Terry left All Japan Pro and wrestled for FMW, IWA, New Japan Pro, FMW, Tarzan Goto's Independent, and IWA shows in six years. Dory had wrestled for All Japan Pro for 22 years and was a special referee for the NWA World Heavyweight title match between Dan Severn and Naoya Ogawa on the UFO show at Yokohama Arena on March 14 of this year.

How about in the United States---let's trace back their records. The Funks did a no-contest with the ECW tag team champions, Public Enemy, on ECW Hostile City Showdown '94 at ECW Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on June 24, 1994. The Funks and Bruiser Bedlam (a.k.a. Johnny K-9 in New Japan Pro), with Jim Cornette, faced Bob Armstrong, Tracy Smothers, and Road Warrior Hawk, with Ron Wright, in a "Coward Waves The Flag Match" on SMW Night of the Legends '94 at Civic Coliseum in Knoxville, Tennessee on August 5, 1994. They had a "Texas Death Match" on SMW Fire on the Mountain '94 at Freedom Hall in Johnson City, Tennessee the next day. The Funks faced Brian Pillman & Bruce Hart on the Stu Hart Tribute Show at Calgary Corral in Calgary, Alberta, Canada on December 15, 1995. They worked together for these shows, too ... Dory faced Tommy Gilbert and Terry faced Doug Gilbert in a "Texas Chain Match" on Eddie Gilbert Memorial Night at Derby Sports Arena in Louisville, Kentucky on March 13, 1997. Dory faced Rob Van Dam and Terry faced Bret Hart on Wrestle Fest '97 / 50 Years of Funk at Fairgrounds Coliseum in Amarillo, Texas on September 11, 1997.

Dory and his wife, Marti, will have their next wrestling training camp, Funking Conservatory / School of Hard Knocks, from December 20 to 25, 1999. Dory has coached a lot of main eventers in both the United States and Japan for years. His passion for wrestling will never be weak. He has already had his 36th Anniversary as a pro wrestler on July 8. He debuted against Jack Dalton (Don Fargo) in Amarillo on July 8, 1963. Dory said, "This life would earn me a good living, but for that good living, this is what I was about to go through. I would be slammed to the wrestling mat hard 75,000 times. I would gaff and bleed all over the place and spill lots of blood 3,250 times. I would drive 2,500,000 miles and fly an additional 12,500,000 miles. I would have 4,250 hangovers and take twenty-five years to figure out, 'That was ridiculous.' I would get hit over the head with a chair thousands of times. I would receive 275 tickets for speeding. The truth is, I wish The Lord would give me just one more lifetime so I could do it all over again." (From Dory's Gunslinger Rap II.)

Terry, Mick Foley, and Jake Roberts are the three main featured stars in a new 1 hour 42 minute documentary movie, entitled "Beyond The Mat," by Barry W. Blaustein, who is a screenwriter for Ron Howard's Imagine Entertainment. This movie shows what three real-life human beings behind the wrestling characters are like, and its run has just started at AMC Century City Theaters in Los Angeles, California from Friday, October 22. I hope that this movie will be released internationally. Barry said, "Every documentary on wrestling seems to focus on whether it's real or not, and is presented with a wink and a nod. Well, I could care less if it's real or not; that's not even an issue. Wrestling has the loudest, greatest fans in the world. Wrestling is wonderful theater; it's good vs. evil. People should just enjoy the sport for what it is. I want to show people why I like it so much."

Terry and his wife, Vicki, have recently helped The Canyon Area Library Council's fund-raising campaign in Canyon, Texas. They are planing to construct a new $1.5 million library building in downtown Canyon. Terry will have his 33rd Anniversary as a pro wrestler on December 28. He debuted against Sputnik Monroe in Amarillo on December 28, 1965.

FMW's president, Shoichi Arai, has strengthened FMW's gaijin (foreign) bookings this year. FMW is sponsored by DirecTV in Japan and chose a much more Americanized format show rather than Atsushi Onita style "garbage." Arai was backstage with Victor Quinones (WWF / IWA) and FMW's booker, Hiromichi "Kodo" Fuyuki, at ECW Anarchy Rulz at the Odeum Expo Center in Chicago on September 19. Arai made notes about their product very eagerly. Arai also hired Junya Inadomi, who went to West Texas A&M University (formerly West Texas State University) to get his journalism degree, as a coordinator for foreign wrestlers. Inadomi's biggest heroes are always The Funks.

In Japan, a cynical comedy group named Neptune (Taizo Harada, Jun Nagura, and Ken Horiuchi) has become popular recently. Harada, 29 years old, grew up as wrestling fan. They play as a mysterious brother tag team named "Dory & Terry" in a comedy program called "Life of Laughing Dogs" on Fuji Television (Channel 8), which televises All Japan Woman's Pro Wrestling. Their performance has drawn very good ratings for late Wednesday night and will get a new and better time slot in the Tokyo area at 8:00 p.m. on Sundays, beginning November 21. The TV station is planning to tape The Funks and Neptune's first meeting for their new program at Yokohama Arena on November 23.

When I see The Funks and their matches, I always reconfirm my reason for being a wrestling fan in the stream of the time. Wrestling will be Wrestling, Boys will be Boys, and The Funks will be The Funks for me.
