Jumbo Tsuruta will be remembered as a legend of Puroresu forever, like Rikidozan, Giant Baba, and Antonio Inoki, by the wrestling fans. He had 3,329 matches in Japan over 26 years. He won the United National Heavyweight title (five times), International Heavyweight title (three times), AWA World Heavyweight title, Triple Crown title (three times), International Tag Team title (eight times), PWF World Tag Team title (two times), and World Tag Team title (six times). 1951-1972

Tomomi Tsuruta was born in Kurashina, Makioka-cho, Higashi-yamanashi, Yamanashi on Sunday, March 25, 1951. He did basketball, swimming, and sumo at Hikawa High School in Yamanashi City, in the eastern part of the Kofu valley, from 1966 to 1968. When he entered the faculty of Law in Chuo University in Tokyo in April 1970, he turned to amateur wrestling. He also trained at the Physical Training School of Japan Grand Self Defence Force in Asaka City, Saitama. He won the All Japan Amateur Wrestling Championship in freestyle and Greco-Roman (weight class: 100.0 kg+) in 1971 and in 1972. He competed in Greco-Roman (weight class: 100kg+) in the XX Olympic Games in Munich, West Germany in 1972. He was scouted by the late Shohei "Giant" Baba and All Japan Pro Wrestling, and they had a press conference at Akasaka Prince Hotel in Tokyo on October 31, 1972.

Tsuruta left Tokyo (Haneda) International Airport for Amarillo, Texas. He was one of the top babyfaces, along with Dory & Terry Funk, Ricky Romero, Jerry Kozak, Nelson Royal, Stan Hansen, Ted DiBiase, and Bob Backlund in Amarillo territory for six months.

All Japan Pro Wrestling announced Tsuruta's entering a hospital. World Tag Team title was vacated. Tsuruta had fought a long battle with hepatitis since then, which prematurely ended his wrestling career.

Tsuruta eventually returned, but it was for very few appearances, and he never headlined again. He entered Tsukuba University as a graduate student on April 6, 1995.

Tsuruta and his family moved to the United States, where he took an Assistant Professor position at the University of Portland in Oregon.

Tsuruta's health took a turn for the worse at the end of 1999, and he returned to Japan.

2000

Tsuruta was in a hospital in Kasamatsu, Gifu Prefecture until April 11 before being moved to a hospital in Brisbane, Australia in the end of April.

Saturday, May 13
Tomomi Tsuruta, 49, passed away in Manila in the Philippines, while hospitalized in the National Kidney Hospital, at 4:00 p.m. He had undergone a kidney transplant under the director of the hospital but suffered from excessive bleeding. He is survived by his wife, Yasuko, and three sons (Yuji, 14, Ken, 7, and Naoki, 4).
