Stan Hansen's Western Lariat

On January 1, 2000, Stan Hansen started his 27th year as a professional wrestler and became one of a few present "four decades" wrestlers. He debuted as a wrestler on January 1, 1973. He has had over 120 Japan tours since his first tour, which was from September 26 to October 30, 1975, with Abdullah the Butcher, Ox Baker, Prince Pullin, Bobby Jaggers, and Larry Zbyszko. He arrived at Narita Airport on January 29, 2000, and did four talk shows at PRISM II (first floor of the same building as Korakuen Hall [fifth floor]), where Mrs. Motoko Baba and All Japan Pro Wrestling had Giant Baba's Memorial Exhibition show on January 29 and 30. He talked about his greatest matches and rivals, such as Baba, Jumbo Tsuruta, and Bruiser Brody. Stan, Akira Taue, & Takao Omori face Mitsuharu Misawa, Kenta Kobashi, & Jun Akiyama in Giant Baba's Memorial Show at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo on January 31 (Baba died on January 31, 1999). He will have another Japan tour from February 12 to 27.

Funks 2000
"The Funks 2000" by Haru Egawa. Haru is one of the best graphic design illustrators in the world today. He has designed a lot of T-shirts for Terry Funk and for ECW.

Another die-hard Texan, Terry Funk, was introduced by WCW as a new commissioner at WCW Monday Nitro on January 3, 2000.Terry Funk on Nitro Kevin Nash challenged Terry to a match at WCW Souled Out, with the winner being the commissioner, when Terry had a non-title / Hard Core match against WCW World Heavyweight champion Bret Hart at WCW Thunder on January 6. Then, Terry planted the flaming branding iron on Nash's gut at Nitro on January 10. Terry was an assistant coach for the celebrity team at the Western Professional Hockey League's 2000 All-Star Celebrity Game in Amarillo, Texas on January 13. After that, Terry lost to Nash in a match for the control of WCW at Souled Out on January 16. However, die-hard Terry did an "Asai Moonsault" and beat Bam Bam Bigelow at Nitro on January 24. Terry got on the microphone, and told Nash that he would have to kill him to get rid of him. Terry beat The Demon (Dale Torborg) with the Kiwi Roll at Thunder on January 26.

Terry Funk and Masanori
Terry Funk and Masanori, Double Cross Ranch, Canyon, Texas, September 13, 1997

Stan Hansen was born in Knox City, Texas on August 29, 1949. He was trained by Dory and Terry Funk in Amarillo, Texas, and the Funks sent him to All Japan Pro, but he was just one of "Mr. Nobodies" in those days. His reputation was up at a stretch when Bruno Sammartino suffered a broken neck at the hands of Hansen at Madison Square Garden in New York on April 26, 1976. Then, Vince McMahon Sr. sent Hansen to New Japan Pro Wrestling in January 1977. He and Antonio Inoki had one of the toughest feuds in Japanese wrestling history until 1981. He jumped back to All Japan Pro when he interfered in the tag team tournament final match between Dory & Terry Funk and Bruiser Brody & Jimmy Snuka at Kuramae Kokugikan (Sumo Hall) in Tokyo on December 13, 1981. Since then, Stan Hansen has wrestled for All Japan Pro and has had tough matches for 18 years. Actually, Stan is a very friendly man who keeps his feet down to earth, though he is famous in some circles for his hatred of "sheets" and "marks." As time goes by, the wrestling business has changed, and his good old partners were all gone, like Bruiser Brody, Giant Baba, Gary Albright, and Bobby Duncum Jr. He doesn't think that he can wrestle three more years or to 30 years, he isn't going to wrestle in the United States anymore, and he doesn't watch WCW or WWF on TV anymore. He is just going to keep traveling alone in his wrestling life here in Japan with respect and a lot of memories.

For 40 years, we Japanese fans have had a lot of "rasslers" from Texas working for various Japanese wrestling offices. They are too numerous to mention (of course, including "self-styled" Texans), such as Texas McKenzie (First Japan tour: October 1960), Dick Hutton (April 1962), Cowboy Bob Ellis (March 1963), Bull Curry (April 1964), Fritz Von Erich (Jack Adkisson) (November 1966), Ricky Romero (September 1967), Dick Murdoch (February 1968), Nelson Royal & Paul Jones (February 1969), Bobby Duncum (Sr.) (April 1969), Eddie Sullivan (October 1969), Dory Funk Jr. (November 1969), Terry Funk (July 1970), Ernie Ladd (September 1970), Blackjack Mulligan (Bob Windham) (November 1970), Dusty Rhodes (November 1971), Killer Tim Brooks (March 1972), Bob Geigel (January 1974), Stan Hansen (September 1975), Scott Casey (July 1976), Jay Youngblood (October 1977), Gino Hernandez (April 1978), Tito Santana (Merced Solis / Dick Blood) (October 1978), Ervin Smith (May 1978---I believe he was the very first wrestler who did the "Power Slam" in Japan), Jake Roberts (January 1979), Kevin & David Von Erich (May 1979), Skip Young (Sweet Brown Sugar) (January 1980), Tom Prichard (January 1981), Kerry Von Erich (March 1983), Black Bart (Rick Harris) (August 1983), Barry Windham (November 1983), Mike Von Erich (January 1987), Joe Deaton (August 1987), Mark & Chris Youngblood (November 1987), Dustin Rhodes (March 1989), The Undertaker (Mark Calaway / Master of Pain / Punisher Dice Morgan) (March 1990), Tiger Conway Jr. (August 1990), Steve Doll (Steve Dunn) (September 1990), Butch Masters (Giant Warrior) (November 1990), Shawn Michaels (January 1991), Tugboat Taylor (April 1992), Chaz (June 1992), Stone Cold Steve Austin (August 1992), Eddy Guerrero (April 1992), Kendall Windham (November 1992), Justin Bradshaw (Big John Hawk) (January 1993), Bobby Duncum Jr. (March 1993), Ahmed Johnson (Big T / Tony Norris) (March 1995), Booker T & Stevie Ray (October 1992), and Tully Blanchard (October 1995).

James Beard, a referee in Dallas, was a booker for NOW in those days. Then, Duncum became one of the regular gaijin [foreign] wrestlers for All Japan Pro Wrestling from May 1995.)

Texas promoters had been booking a lot of Japanese wrestlers ... Ed McLemore (Dallas) and Morris Siegel (Houston) from the 1950's to 1960's ... Paul Boesch (Houston) from the 1950's to 1980's ... Funk Family / Western States Sports (Amarillo) from the 1950's to 1980's ... Jack Adkisson (Fritz Von Erich) / World Class Championship Wrestling (Dallas) from the 1960's to 1980's ... Jerry Jarrett / United States Wrestling Association (Dallas / Memphis) in the 1980's ... Jim Crockett Jr. / National Wrestling Alliance (Dallas) in 1994 ... Joe Blanchard / Southwest Championship Wrestling from the 1970's to 1980's, and Fred Behrend / Texas All-Star Wrestling in the 1980's (San Antonio). Giant Baba couldn't found All Japan Pro without the Funks' support in 1972. New Japan Pro had a strong relationship with the World Class area in the 1980's. A lot of Japanese wrestlers had taken in thorough experiences and training in Texas territories. Akihisa Takachiho painted his face and breathed green mist to be "The Great Kabuki" in Dallas in the early 1980's. The other names are too numerous to mention---Duke Keomuka, Hiro Matsuda, Kintaro Oki (Kim ILL), Antonio Inoki, Seiji Sakaguchi, Umanosuke Ueda (Mr. Ito / Tengu), Kotetsu Yamamoto & Kantaro Hoshino, Great Kojika (Kung Fu Lee), Masanori Toguchi (Kim Duk / Tiger Chang Lee), Kazuo Sakurada (Chang Chun / Kendo Nagasaki / Dragon Master), Killer Khan (Masashi Ozawa), Magic Dragon (Kazuharu Sonoda), Tetsuo Sekigawa (Ninja / Mr. Pogo), Yoshiaki Yatsu, Toshiaki Kawada, Keiji Muto (Ninja / The Great Muta), Osamu Nishimura, and more.
