Kieran Culkin, in an incredible performance, is Igby. He is the son of wealthy, emotionally hindered parents. There is nothing they want more than to see Igby follow in the footsteps of his older brother Oliver (Ryan Phillippe). But Igby is a free spirit, admittedly an insecure one. In order to escape his mundane existance he runs away to New York City where he encounters many colorful characters. Any similiarity to Holden Caulfield or The Graduate is purely intentional and most welcome. Igby Goes Down is a thoughtful, dynamic first film from Burr Speers. Following hot on the heels of the impressive Gosford Park, Ryan Phillippe is definately enjoying the kind of critical respect that is hard to come by in film. This one ranks up there as one of his best pictures. |
