A street in ancient Pompeii, near Naples, Italy. The image is courtesy of Philip Greenspun, this one from his Photo CD 0305 available in his 6,000 image archive located here. Taken in 1992. Pompeii was, of course, buried as a result of the eruption of the Mt. Vesuvius volcano in 79 A.D.
