"He said it would behoove me to have more social contact with the students.
I did try to explain that my  vocational choice of librarian was a deliberate
attempt to minimise said content."
(The Puppet Show)

Rupert Giles was the librarian at Sunnydale High. Most importantly, Giles is Buffy's Watcher. Giles is also the keeper of the Watcher Diaries, which are the recorded events of all past watchers, and the demons they encounter. He always worries about Buffy's well-being.

He's responsible, a little bit too serious, and is always seen in tweed. He's not very into modern technology, meaning he breaks into a sweat at the mention of a computer. He's pretty much the brains of the slayage thing, not to say Buffy isn't smart, he's just the one who gets stuck with research, which Willow and Xander sometimes help with. He has had a weird past, including a very nasty monster and a very nasty friend Ethan, who sometimes shows up and makes things weird, and in one episode turns him into a demon. Giles past must have been strange, because when turned into a teenager, he was reckless and pretty scary.

Giles and Jenny Calendar, the  computer teacher at Sunnydale High, fall in love with one another and Giles is completely devastated when Angel kills her.

Being A Demon
Giles was turned into a fyarl demon in the episode 'A New Man'

What the demon looks like: Tufty ears, horns, the ability to shoot out huge jets of paralysing mucus.

They're usually considered to be stupid thugs who serve other demons  in their evil schemes, because they're too dumb or lazy to plot anything themselves.
Giles finds himself transformed into one after a night of crying into his pint, courtesy of old pal Ethan Rayne. Even Giles can't resist the Fyarls angry impulses.
Luckily Buffy recognises her Watcher when looking into the beasts eyes (but not before attacking and stabbing him in the chest). She finds Ethan and Giles is turned back into his old self.

Giles Quotes

Giles: "I was a librarian for years. This is exactly the same, except people pay for the things they don't return. It'll give me focus. Increase my resources. And it'll prevent you lot from trampling all over my flat at all hours. There may even be some space for you to train in the back."
Buffy: "Boy, you've really thought this through. How bored were you last year?"
Giles: "I watched Passions with Spike. Let us never speak of it."
(Real Me, Giles is the new owner of the magic shop)

Giles: "I'm not supposed to have a private life?"
Buffy: "No! 'Cause you're very, very old, and it's gross."
Giles: "Well, before I succumb to the ravages of age, why don't you tell me what brings you here."
(The Freshman)

Giles: "I've been awake all night. I know I'm supposed to teach you self-reliance, but I can't leave you out there to fight alone. To hell with what's right, I'm ready to back you up. Let's find the evil a-and fight it together."
(The Freshman)

Olivia: "So everything you told me was true."
Giles: "Well no, um, I wasn't actually one of the original members of Pink Floyd. But the monster stuff, yes."
(Hush)
