Family arms in South Africa
arms of a family head arms of the heir to a family headship, with a black label

This website – a branch office, so to speak, of Armoria – derives its address from the Afrikaans word for a bend or diagonal stripe, occasionally used as a mark of difference for family coats of arms. It is a mirror to a URL ending in barensteel – the Dutch word for the mark of difference an eldest son puts on his shield during his father’s lifetime, called in English a label. These names seem appropriate for sites specialising in family arms. (For an explanation of the shields left and right [the right-hand one bearing a label], click here)
