After fixing the hardware problem you must restore the Sunday normal tape. A normal backup captures all data. In addition, you will need to restore the Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday Incremental tapes. An incremental backup only captures data since the last normal or the last incremental backup. Thursday's incremental backup will only have data that changed since Wednesday's incremental backup.
Any data created on Friday will be lost as a restore will only allow you to recover up to Thursday night's backup.

By copying the file to the C: drive it will be accessible to both Windows 98 and
Windows 2000 as Both Windows 2000 and Windows 98 can read files locally on a FAT32
partition.
An NTFS drive cannot be converted to FAT32.
If the C: drive is converted to NTFS, Windows 98 will be unable to boot.
Windows 98 can access files locally that were created in Windows 2000 as long as
the file system is FAT or FAT32.

After fixing your hardware problem, you must restore the Sunday normal tape. A normal backup captures all data. The only additional step needed is to restore Thursday's differential tape. Differential backups capture all data since the last normal backup so Thursday's tape will contain the data that changed on Monday through Thursday.
Restoring Sundays normal backup then restoring Monday through Thursday's differential backups would work but it is not necessary to restore Monday through Wednesday as all of the data is on Thursday's tape.
Any data created on Friday will be lost as a restore will only allow you to recover up to Thursday night's backup.

Renaming an account will keep the same SID (Security Identifier). A SID is unique to each account. All rights and permissions are actually assigned to this SID. Renaming a user will cause all rights and permissions to remain intact.
Once an account is deleted, the SID that goes along with that account is gone forever. Even if an account is created with the same name, it will have a new SID and will in effect be a new account.
Copying a user profile will not copy rights and permissions.

Changes to the HAL are made through Device Manager in Windows 2000. You can change from a single processor to a multi processor HAL using this method. If you wish to change to a Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) HAL, you can reinstall Windows 2000 as an upgrade. The uptomp.exe tool from NT4 is no longer used.

When a file is encrypted, a data recovery field (DRF) is attached. This field contains information on who is allowed to recover the file. By default Enterprise Admins are recovery agents and will be able to recover the file. If Terry's username is used to logon to the network, the file can be unencrypted. You can assign additional recovery agents but until the file is accessed, the DRF will not be regenerated so the additional recovery agent will still not be able to recover the file. An encrypted file cannot be copied by an unauthorized user even with the proper NTFS permissions.

In order to backup the registry, COM+ class registration database and the system boot files you will need to backup the system state data. System state data can only be backed up locally. It is not available to backup directly from a remote computer. You will need to run backup on each computer that you want to back up the system state data on. System state data is backed up when the box is checked to backup system state data, it is not backed up automatically. One other option would be to run backup locally on all servers and backup the system state data to a shared folder. This shared folder can then be backed up from a single server.

Microsoft digitally signs all drivers for use with Windows 2000. You have the option of always installing unsigned files, seeing a warning and deciding whether or not to install the unsigned file, or block the installation of unsigned files. If you are an administrator, you will be able to select 'Apply setting as system default' to make the settings the default for all users who log onto the computer. These settings are found on the hardware tab of the system properties dialog box. The add hardware wizard has no option to block the installation of unsigned drivers.
While disabling floppy, CD, Internet and E-mail may work, it is far from efficient and may hinder the user's ability to do his/her work. Running the system file checker will not prohibit users from installing unsigned drivers.

Disabling a device using Device Manager will prevent the device from loading at startup. The resources that the device was using will become free. Reinstalling the 10/100 NIC using the drivers from the built in NIC will prevent the card from working properly. Replacing the drivers with updated drivers will not change the resources that the device is using. Built-in NIC cards are generally part of the system board and are not meant to be removed.

By deleting files in his folder to free up enough space, Joey will be able to save his data. If one of Joey's coworkers has the appropriate permissions and takes ownership of files in Joey's directory, those files will no longer count towards Joey's quota. Only files that Joey owns are counted against his quota limit. If the administrator increases Joey' quota, he will be able to save the files. Compressing data will have no effect as quotas are based on data in its uncompressed state.

When a DHCP server is unavailable, an IP address is automatically assigned using APIA (Automatic Private IP addressing). This will be a 169.254.x.y address. A default gateway is not needed for local communication, only when routing to a remote network.

Web browsing relies on a Domain Name Server (DNS) to resolve fully qualified domain names (FQDN) to IP addresses. Without a DNS server or a hosts file, Tommy would have to type IP addresses of websites in the browser. Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS) is used to map NetBIOS names to IP addresses and is not used for web browsing. If the default gateway or subnet mask were incorrect, external FTP sites would not be reachable.

If 'Hide specified Control Panel applets' or 'Show only specified control panel applets' is enabled in a group policy, users still have access to control panel from the help menu. Both 'Hide specified Control Panel applets' and 'Show only specified control panel applets' affect the control panel window as well as the start menu. Control.exe is the command to launch the control panel window but the control panel window will still be affected by the group policy.

Server for NFS can be installed on either Windows 2000 Professional or Windows 2000 Server and allows any NFS enabled client (typically UNIX) to access files. Gateway for NFS is installed on Windows 2000 Server and allows clients running Win9.x, WinNT and Windows 2000 to access UNIX files without having to install a an NFS client. There are two steps to setting up auditing of files and folders. First auditing of file and folder access must be enabled through Group Policy, then the files and folders to audit must be selected and the list of users and type of access to audit must be selected (this can be done through Windows Explorer). The security template hisecws.inf is used to tighten up permissions and rights, it does not enable auditing. Audit logs can be viewed in the security log in event viewer.

The quota can be set higher for the Vice President as a higher quota can be set for an individual, they do not have to be equal for all users on a volume. Renaming the VP's account will not help as quotas are based on the SID (Security Identifier) that goes with the account, quotas are not based on the account name.

By default, new installs of Windows 2000 Professional have very strict security settings. Running the secedit security tool to apply the compatws.inf (compatible workstation) will loosen the security up to allow legacy applications including Office97 to run. Giving everyone full control to the temp directory will not allow these applications to run. Sally will not be allowed to reinstall the applications if she is only a member of the users group. Reinstalling would not help as the issues are related to rights and permissions. Applying the basicws.inf will bring the security back to that of a new Windows 2000 install.

Client Service for Netware works with NWLink to allow access to NetWare File and Print servers. NWLink is automatically installed when you install CSNW. NWLink alone can not allow access to the files without a redirector (CSNW). Gateway Service for Netware is installed on a Server. It acts as a gateway and passes all requests to the Netware server. It is used instead of installing Client Services on all of the desktops. TCP/IP will not work as NWLink is the only protocol on the NetWare server.
