Education
Henry Luce inspired his step-son William to study theology at Tuft University in Massachusetts, where he started 1968.
There he found his interest in acting. Three years later he changed subjects to acting-class and stayed in London the final year, where he joined a acting course.
After his return to the United States William went to Juilliard for three years, than he spent a year at the Oregon shakespeare-festival, what he noticed on a motorbike-trip through the USA in 1975. So his first professional acting engagements he had in Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's Journey into Night and with the Ashland Shakespeare Festival.


"One day I came on stage and saw, that I had learned something. That was a good feeling." said William Hurt about this time.


Back in New York William Hurt became a member of the Circle Repertory Company and worked with the New York Shakespeare Festival.
