Swift - An Equation Editor in Java
Swift Home Page
Swift is a graphical equation editor in Java. Look at swift in action in
the image alongside. Now you can link your equation into your HTML pages
as easy as it is in Word or any other word processor document. All you have to do
is use the Swift Equation Editor and compose your equation and then an
applet will draw it on your web page for you.
At the time we write Swift, we also wrote a survey of the
methods at that time for equations in HTML pages.
The Tools window that you see on top consists of tools which you can
click and drop into the main equation window below.
Swift consists of two components:
-
Equation Editor
-
This is the program with a graphical user interface to create the equation.
Look at screen shot above. It is written as a Java Application rather than
a Java Applet. Click here if you do
not know the difference :-)
-
Equation Viewer
-
This is the Java Applet, which shows the equation you have composed on
the web page. It is basically a stripped down version of the equation eqitor,
so that time taken to load the applet over the network is reduced.
Another reason why we did this is that, the JDK1.1.3 (Java Development
Kit - used for writing java programs) makes programming much easier than
the JDK1.0. But as of now no browser supports it. So we had to write the
applet in JDK1.0. Since writing the editor in 1.0 would be very painful,
we decided on this two pronged strategy!
You can see an applet in action alongside, if your browser supports Java
applets.
