Welcome to West Allis Central and the Freshman Initiative Team (FIT).

Purpose of FIT:

The Freshman Initiative Team (FIT) is a group of students who share the same common core-curriculum classes. Two-thirds of FIT students will also have a guided study hall led by a teacher from one of their core-curriculum classes. The purpose is to improve WKCE performance and ensure a successful transition to high school through student management and collaborative curriculum planning.

Parents and students Should know that this is an exciting opportunity for their son/daughter to work with four highly qualified educators in a school setting designed to promote achievement. These teachers will regularly communicate, collaborate, and problem-solve. They will also be in a Guided Study Hall designed to teach study skills and provide homework support. Much like the "house system" in the middle school, we believe this program will be very effective in helping students find success in high school.

Courses Offered:

  • English-9
  • Social Studies – US History (20th Century)
  • Science – Physical Science
  • Algebra-9
  • Introduction to Math Concepts
  • Guided Study Hall

NOTE: The English, Social Studies, and Science classes will be constructed using curriculum and materials from existing slow-paced and regular courses. This is to say that the classes are neither "slow-paced" nor "regular" – it is simply a "Freshman Initiative Team (FIT)" class. Therefore, students with either slow-paced or regular courses listed on their schedule are appropriate for placement.

Guided Study Hall:

There will 3 sections of Guided Study Hall. Only students with Algebra (or administrative sign-off) can opt out of the Guided Study Hall provision.

Students will receive .25 credit per semester or .5 elective credit for a year of participation.

Two-thirds of the students will be in a Guided Study Hall led by one of the FIT teachers. The Guided Study Hall curriculum is focused on improving study skills (e.g. test taking, note-taking, and reading comprehension). It will also be a place for students to complete homework and projects.

FIT Student Selection Process:

The selection process was based on a number of factors:

  1. WKCE test scores.
  2. Performance in school
  3. Teacher recommendation
  4. Regular attendance
