For a couple of years the
Sheridan Men's League
had talked about forming a women's league. Finally one of their members
decided to do something about it.
At the Men's banquet in 1984 Ron Holliday passed a paper for any of the ladies
that might be interested to sign. The following year he called a meeting for
the ladies that were interested. Four ladies showed up, Ida Reddick, Roberta
Badger, Hazel Johns and Beverly Holliday. These ladies decided to start the
Sheridan Women's Horseshoe League
and to give it a try. They also knew it would take more women to get it
started. The hunt was on for more people. They got another 8 women to give it
a try. They were Betty Moore, Nancy Carter, Louise Sheean, Sonja Means, Lois
Suttle, Melissa Perry, Vickie Dellingner and Treasa Stacy. Some of them had
never pitched at all. So they ask the men to help.
The men had to show
some
of them how to score, keep averages, etc. They got the drift real quick. The
men started to stand around with nothing to do, so they started another men's
league on the same night. It was called the Sheridan Men's Monday Night
League. Only eight men participated.
After two years of
sharing the same night
at the courts, the same banquet, meeting times it was decided at the 1986
banquet to join forces and become the Sheridan Mixed Horseshoe League in 1987.
Several other decisions were made that night. Such as: Team Structure, Award
structure, League Constitution, League Rules, Officers and most of all the
league decided it wanted to be the best ALL AROUND league in the state. Not
the largest, just the best. No one can tell which league is the best.
However we have tried to keep a track record of attempting to do this. It
wasn't easy going for a while, it took lots of hard work and many volunteers to
get things organized and working smooth. Lots of dedication in the first few
years has paid off. We have a very successful mixed league with lots of
wonderful people and more to come.
