Want to come out and play? That query from years past is now an invitation to fun for adults living in both Western PA and Eastern OH. Organizers are in the process of getting the red, bouncy ball rolling on the PA Shenango Valley kickball division. The league, the first of its kind in the area, will be a division of the The World Adult Kickball Association.
WAKA was founded in 1998 by four friends from Washington D.C. Its mission statement is: "To Provide and Promote the Joy of Kickball to Those Young at Heart" and since WAKA's inception it has done just that; growing to include over 20,000 players from all walks of life with divisions that can be found all across the nation, as well as in India and the Czech Republic
In the minds of some, kickball may be thought of only as a game played during elementary school recess, but for many 20, 30, 40, and 50-somethings, kickball has become an ultra-hip trend.
Kickball appeals to these kids-at-heart for many reasons. Not the least of which is the opportunity that the game provides to relive those carefree, childhood days spent hanging out with friends both old and new. With rules stating that teams must include at least four men and four women, WAKA Kickball divisions provide an ideal environment for socializing.
"Residents in this area don't have many opportunities to socialize, but by participating in the PA Shenango Valley kickball division area residents over the age of 21 will get the opportunity to make new friends in a fun, relaxed environment," said Heather Wallace who is leading the campaign to bring kickball to the area.
In order for the division's formation to proceed, organizers need people to voice their interest. "We are in the preliminary phases right now and we can't begin officially forming the league until WAKA knows that enough interest exists. Area residents can let WAKA know that they want a local division just by signing up for a free myWAKA login and selecting PA Shenango Valley as their nearest Metro Area", said Wallace.
If it's been a long time since your last foray on to the kickball field you may have forgotten, but kickball is played a lot like softball and baseball. Kickball, however, does have its differences. There are no bats or gloves, the ball is kicked not hit, and throwing the ball at another player won't get you ejected from the game. Also, kickball games usually last an hour and are comprised of only five innings.
Another major difference between kickball and most other sports leagues is that the competition isn't as fierce. Out there on the kickball field it doesn't matter who wins or loses. For players it's all about having a good time and getting to be a kid again; even if only for one hour.
