Student Dies of Dehydration in Parking Lot

By Christopher

Campus Police found the severely dehydrated body of a student in the Student and Visitor Lot across from Building G. Julio Rodriguez’s body was found only feet from Charles Lindbergh Avenue, the border between Nassau Community College and Mitchel Field Athletic Complex. Several feet from his body they also found one water bottle, which, experts say, is not nearly enough for the harrowing journey across the parking lot. Authorities believe that he was making the long, grueling trek to Mitchel Field in search of a better parking spot.
Authorities are unsure of exactly how many students cross over to Mitchel Field each day; but they know that there are many and the number increases everyday. Representatives of Mitchel Field say the influx of Nassau students has got to stop; while others believe they are just good kids looking for a better place to park. Kent Brockman, a Mitchel Field trustee, does not doubt that the majority of the students are good people, but, “You’ve got to look at it from my point of view. You’ve got these people over at Hofstra and McDonald’s calling me xenophobic, but that’s not it at all. They’ve just got to find a parking spot the right way, that’s all.”
Brockman, along with many others, feels the solution is to tighten security between Nassau and Mitchel. Others say that will not work, and that rather than doing nothing, they should install water stations and build a bridge over Charles Lindbergh Avenue in order to ensure that no one else has to die. “Let’s face it, they’re gonna keep crossing over, so we might as well make sure they don’t have to die,” reasoned Lance Cutler, a student at Hofstra.
Neither of these solutions, however, will get to the root of the problem. As long as the parking is so poor and scarce over at Nassau, students will continue to be lured to Mitchel Field by the promise of a better spot.
