James SharrockJAMES SHARROCK (July 1750-March 28, 1826): James Sharrock was born in Lancashire Co., England in July of 1750 to William and ??? Sharrock. He was Christened in Liverpool on July 8, 1750. According to family legend, he was a member of the English army during the (Revolutionary)War of 1776. He apparently came across one of his old friends (who had become a Colonist) from England when he was searching the battlefield, and decided to join the Colonists in their fight for independence. He was given land (we think in present day Guernsey Co., Ohio) after the War as payment for his service. He married the former Jane Everard in New York. They had the following children: Benjamin, Timothy, Phoebe, George, Everard V. Mary Jane, Mary Polly, and John Watson. James died in 1826 in Guernsey Co., Ohio and is buried in Leatherwood Cemetery (aka Miller's Methodist Episcopal Church Cemetery). His old stone is cracked in half (and according to Homer Eiler has been that way for at least 70 years!), and a "new" stone has been placed near the old one. There is a "1776" marker from the DAR on his grave.

This is a photo taken in the 1960's of the church building at Miller's Methodist Episcopal Cemetery. James Sharrock's grave is directly behind this building. As you enter the gate (in 2000), you would walk in the front door.

Another photo taken in the 1960's, this photo shows the newer, eastern part of the cemetery. Some of those stones have since toppled over (2000).

He and his family moved to the Crawford/Morrow Co., Ohio area around 1818, and he was very instrumental in maintaining the peace with the neighboring Indian tribes. He and Tenty had the following children: Sarah Williams, James S., Joseph W. Elizabeth ("Betsey") Ann, Abner, William, Finley, Maria, Emily, and Constance ("Tenty").

Finley SharrockFINLEY SHARROCK (May 9, 1831-February 24, 1910): Finley Sharrock was born in 1831 in Galion, Ohio, the son of Benjamin and "Tenty" (Williams) Sharrock. Finley was a farmer by trade, according to various census reports. He was listed in the 1850 Ohio Census (Morrow Co.) with a wife, Matilda, but we have not found any further information on her. On May 6, 1852, however, he married Hannah McClow/McCloe/Mucklow in Morrow County, Ohio. He and Hannah had the following children: Lorenzo M., Frances Elwood ("Frank"), Sarah Lin, Hattie Mary, James (C.), Mortimer, Abner, Edward (Abner & Edward were twins), Edith Elnora ("Nory"), Stillborn Boy, and John Homer. Finley and Hannah are both buried in Iberia Cemetery, Iberia, Ohio in an unmarked grave (except for a large millstone from his father's mill) near the graves of Edith Elnora, Lorenzo, and Sarah Lin.

Her husband Frank was struck by lightning and killed at the age of 28, leaving her with 2 small children to raise (Gracie had died as an infant). Kinsel was injured as a child when he got hit in the head with a stone. This injury later combined with a bout of spinal menengitis led to his stay at the Gallipolis mental institution in Gallipolis, Ohio, where he later died at the age of 33. Gladys lived to be 87 years old, outliving all of her immediate family. After Frank's death, Nory remarried, this time to Daniel Eichler on January 30, 1906 in Galion, Ohio. She died of breast cancer on March 29, 1913 in Richland County, Ohio.
