From the Files of

Homer Eiler

This information was gathered from sheets typed out by Homer Eiler himself which he had put together into a 3 ring binder sometime around 1925-1928. Much of this information appears in family history booklet that he published in 1928, but some of it never made it into the booklet due to his personal finances at the time.

Polly R. Sharrock (1797-1799)

This below was also sent by the Rev. J.C. Eason of Peekshill (Peekskill) in August 1926:
He writes very interestingly about it.--Says that the Methodist church now stands on the site of an old cemetery. That when the church was built 16 years ago, that the trustees removed what they thought was all, the stones out to the "Cortlandt Cemetery" noted above (below).
But recently that he was walking over the ground around the church and the parsonage, and noticed one tombstone, lying flat in the corner. Upon turning it over, he found that it was that of a Sharrock, and the inscription reads as follows---
"In memory of Polly R Sharrock, daughter of James and Jane Sharrock
who died Sept 26th 1799,
aged 2 years, 4 months, and 13 days."

"Sleep on sweet babe and take thy rest,
Until the resurrection of the Blest,
Then you and I shall ascend on high,
And meet together in the sky."

This is one of the very best records found to seal the fact that our James Sharrock lived at Peekshill (Peekskill). The names James and Jane are the same names that are found in the will in Guernsey Co O, in 1826, where James died.
Note that the birth of this babe is May 13 1797. Now we are supposed to place the birth of Everard at 1791, as his tombstone says "aged 75 yrs," and he died June 1866.--So this babe must have been the last child born. For I feel positive that all the other seven were born before 1797. Resp, Homer Eiler.

James Sharrock (1811-1841)

The following inscription was taken from a tombstone in the old cemetery known as "Old St. Peter Yard" at Peekskill New York. Was sent by the Rev. J.C. Eason pastor of the 1st Methodist Church. Aug 11th 1926
While above stated in Peekskill, to be more accurate this graveyard is in the Episcopal Church yard, known as St. Peter's yard, at Van Cortlandt near Peekskill.---
-----JAMES SHARROCK----
Born in the City of New York, Nov 25th 1811
Died in the City of New Orleans Nov 25th 1841
of Consumption.--

"His remains were brought home in the packet ship Mississippi and deposited in this cemetery. Words are inadequate to portray the sense of sorrow experienced by his near of kin at the loss of one who was endeared to them by a thousand acts of kindness.
They can only take satisfaction in the reflection that their loss is his gain, and await in patience and resignation the time that shall unite them to the object of their most affectionate and cherished regard."
Erected by his brother Dr. Wm Sharrock and his sister Mrs. M.J. Fearon, of New York.
