1.  Pre-class work is the Journal question(s) written on the chalk board.  When you enter class, you should write the date and journal question(s).  Then, brainstorm some possible answers.
2.  At the end of class or after school, you should write what you learned to further answer the question(s).
3.  Every two weeks**, you will turn in on A SEPARATE PIECE PAPER  a JOURNAL REFLECTION.   The Reflection should include:
a)  Two topics we studied that you want to remember and WHY you want to remember the topics
b)  What you learned about the two topics that you believe are important to remember (at least 3 – 4 things)
c)  What activities we did in class that helped you learn (at least 1) and why/ how it helped you learn
d)  What we didn’t study related to the topic(s) that you’d like to learn more about or any questions you have about the topic(s)

You may write your answer in paragraphs or list (a) (answer)  (b)  (answer)  etc.

Class Constitutions  2003 - 2004

Social Studies Expectations /
Granding Policy

Grades are based on:

Graded assignments, tests: …………………..60%
Homework ………................................…... 10%
Response Journal…........................................10%
Attendance / Punctuality ……............……….10%
Participation / Preparation ……..........……....10%
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Homework will be collected on Wednesday and Fridays unless there is no school.  If a student has a written excused absence, s/he may turn in the assignment up to 2 days late.  No homework will be accepted more than 1 week after the due date.  Student should record assignments in their Agenda.

Graded assignments include group and individual projects, class presentations, open-ended writing assignments, etc.  Students will have time during class to work on many assignments though some will have to be completed at home.  Any assignment turned in up to a week late will have 20% deducted from the final grade.  Any assignment turned in more than a week late, will have 50% deducted from the grade.  If a student has a written  excused absence for more than 2 days, s/he has up to one week following the due date to turn in the assignment.

Tests are usually in-class but a few may be take-home tests.  I give test study sheets 3 – 5 days before the test.  If a student misses an in-class test, the test must be taken before or after school within two days after returning form an excused medical / family emergency absence.  All tests must be taken within a week of the original test date.

Final projects or tests are 10% of the final grade.  Therefore, if a student does not do the final project, the final grade will be one letter grade less than his/her class average.

Response journals are weekly reflections on what we have studied.  Students will select one pre-class assignment topic which is related to what we are studying, and write a formal response.  (I will give out specific directions for the response journals.)  I will collect response journals every few weeks to read / comment on the reflections.  Students will receive credit for the response journal if they follow the directions and complete the assignment.

Attendance, punctuality, preparation and participation are essential to doing well in class.  Students are responsible to find out what they missed and make up assignments.  Each day a student may earn up to three points for attendance, punctuality and participation / preparation.

Cooperation is integral to the class.  Students will often work together in cooperative teams.  Students may also work cooperatively on homework assignments.  If students work together on homework, they should include the names of their partners on the assignment.  (Each student must turn in their own assignment).  On individual graded assignments, if it is obvious a student has copied another student’s work, I will return the assignment for the student to rewrite.

Revision & reflection are also integral to the class.  If a student turns in a written assignment or project that is incomplete or predominantly off-track, I will include suggestions for improving the assignment.  The rewritten or represented assignment is due within three days.

Access to grade / attendance records  Students may ask to see their grade / attendance before of after class.  I will give everyone a copy of their average / attendance at the middle and end of each marking period.   Grades are also posted on-line ("Think Wave Grade Book.")
