What I did at the Blitz
by Record Mirror December 1983
To The Sunday Press it was just a bunch of kids dressing up weird.  To the sussed sartorialists involved it meant perhaps just a little more .....  Transferring the former of the original ' Bowie Night' at Soho cellar Billy's - Rusty Egan bossing the turntables while Steve Strange wetted the clients at the door - The Blitz became the blueprint for a thousand one-nighters up and down the land, radically influencing fashion from the high sttreet to high-chic while also inspiring a host of current chart toppers.
So let's return to the days when frilly shirts were the rigeour and Boy George was just 'an elitist poseur' to find out what this King of clubs menat to its diehard regulars....
Midge Ure  - (Ultravox)  : " It meant a lot to me - it was the only club at that time where I could get in free.  it made me feel very manly, 'cos all the other boys wore frocks "

Andy Polaris - (Animal Nightlife) :  "A progression from the stagnating punk scene, but using the same ethic of self promotion and motivation.  it was a refreshing atmosphere at first but a lot of people got the wrong end of panstick.  It ws the media trying to mass market so-called individuality and ending up with a hard of sheep in wolf's clothing."

Steve Strange - (Visage)  : "The Blitz meant a lot to me because there was so much reativity collected under one roof - not only bands like Spandau Ballet and Visage, but young designers,  photograpers - even milliners.  It was like a burst of energy at a time when the London scene seemed so stagnant

Jeremy Healy - ( Haysi Fantayzee)
"The highlight of the Blitz was when I realised that by having a silly haircut you got a lot of attention "

Peter Godwin  -  " Wich the Blitz Steve  Strange and Rusty Egan trasnformed the face of London nightlife. It was a catalyst that spurred into action young musicians, DJ's, designers, writers, painters, dancers and entrepreneurs all over Great Britain.  The influence of the 300 or so people who used to congregate there every Tuesday has apread all over the world - from the cover of Rolling Stone to the catwalks of Tokyo"

Chris Sullivan - ( Blue Rondo A La Turk ) : "The Blitz was a meeting place for a group of like-minded people all of whom were intent on playing on active part in their own lives....and we used to get pissed there too "

Rusty Egan - (Visage ) :
" The Blitz said everyting for me ! " - ( A man of  few words our Rusty.  But please not trendy, XTC disc an Britain turntable ! )
