Mmm, yeah. Way back, well before "Mellow Gold" was released, Beck made this classic appearence on KCRW. "Loser" was just becoming a hit, and was a single, but the album wasn't out. Performing either to tape, or just with drummer Dallas as accompaniment, Beck lays down 6 classic songs! "Loser" is sung and adlibbed ("slice the mango!") to a tape. "Mexico" is a classic. "Death is Coming to Get You" is nutty banjo fun. "Whimsical Actress"! What a blast! "Pay No Mind", you know - but as usual with this song, he sings some new lyrics. "MTV" is Beck having more fun. The interview actually ends up being a pretty good Beck history lesson. [35 minutes; Complete set; radio performance + interview]

Beck's second time on KCRW. Same dweeby host, but Beck's about to become a star in a few moments. There's a lot more interviewing than the first time. Beck's cohort in the studio is Chris Ballew (later of the Presidents of the United States of America), and Ballew's a great partner here. Beck's really coming in to his own as a performer, and they have fun, because he's not big enough for there to be any expectations -- none of these songs are actually on his new album! "It's All In Your Mind" is my favorite "rare" Beck song, and sounds wonderful here. "Howling Wolves" is a weird noise tape they cooked up -- "Bon Jovi in a vacuum cleaner", as they call it. [40 minutes; Complete set; radio performance + interview]

A very fine, loose, early morning performance. "Mutations" was a lowkey album, and this was one of the few promotions for it (and definitely the best). If I remember correctly, this show was the morning "Mutations" was released in America. A decent interview is interspersed with the songs, thus the long track times. "Debra" is perfect - it's acoustic guitar and piano and full band vocals are unique to this morning; it is my single all-time favorite version. "Tropicalia" includes some early hints at songs that would end up being on "Midnite Vultures" a year later. Good show! [60 minutes; Complete set; radio broadcast]

An excellent show, broadcast on the radio. The performance is quite spirited too, especially considering it was a radio festival. :-) Highlights -"Debra", "Devils Haircut", and the "Mixed Bizness". I must also note DJ Swamp on the top of his game! [One disc; Complete set; audience recording;]

9. Debra (8:03) 9. Devils Haircut (6:56)
10. Hollywood Freaks (4:12)
Not a perfect ten audience recording, as it feels somewhat distant from the stage. It is quite clear though. The tender songs ("Beautiful Way", "Jack-ass", "Sissyneck", "Hollow Log") come off better here than the wilder ones like "Get Real Paid" and "Where It's At". "Milk and Honey" is as always fantastic. [Two discs; Complete set; audience recording; 2-second gaps]
