Thailand is a beautiful and peaceful place(although Bangkok is not so peaceful rather it is quite closely knit and packed place).

'Truly' a land of smiles and courtesy .

Couple of Thai festivals are very unique. Most of the people across the globe might have heard about these festivals."Songkran "- the thai Water festival & "Loy Krathong" - is a Thai festival of Lights.

Songkran usually falls in the month of April . This is the start of Thai new year.People splash and spray water at each other .This festival usually goes on for 3 -4 days. Some people also apply talcum powder to each other. In April the mercury starts to rise and this is quite a wel come relief. Many people though they don't know you would still smile at you and can throw water amidst the shouts of Sawaddi songkran !!( Happy Songkran ). This is a unique way to wel come the Thai new year .

In Loy-Kra-thong People burst fire crackers and float small candles in the river. I have been to river chao - Phraya every time and let me tell you the sight is really magnificent .It is amazing to see floating lights in the darkness. This is somewhat similar to Dipawali - which is celebrated in India , but the crackers are not like the ones which are primarily used in India - there the crackers burst with loud noise but here such crackers are not allowed .

One more festival to add - "Navratri period" co incides with 9/10 day vegatarian festival in Thailand - During this period majority of Chinese-Thai population turns to vegtarianisn.

'Songkran' is the real time to be in Thailand . Where ever you are in Thailand whether it is Bangkok or upcountry the fun is same . Especially if possible one can try and go to Chiang Mai ( Northern part of Thailand ) because Songkran is celebrated with full gaiety and in a very special way over there . Some of my friends have also tried to go to Laos border but they could not enjoy as much as that of Chiang mai.
