    Unfolding a Cone

This is the sequel to the tutorial on Converting part to sheetmetal.

Although a perfectly pointed conical sheetmetal is never fabricated in real life, this tutorial gives you more insight (no pun intended) into harnessing the benefits of the new convert to sheetmetal command that first appeared in Solid Edge V16.

    Creating a Cone in Sheetmetal

Begin with the Part environment and create a cone using any method like revolving a traingle about its vertical side or by lofting between a circle and a point.

Note: If you create using a loft, make sure you select the Point option from the Edgebar, after selecting the circle.

    See figure on right.

    Slice and hollow out

Cut the cone vertically and hollow it out using the Thin Wall command.

    See figure on right.

    Switch to Sheetmetal

Save the part and start a new sheetmetal document.

Select Insert > Part Copy and insert the hollow cone part file.

Next, Select the Convert to Sheet Metal command and select the face as shown and click Finish.

    Unbend the cone

In the Unbend command, select the face as shown in figure for the fixed face.

This should unfold the cone correctly,
