CBy KELLY SUDZINA Staff Writer An early morning accident in Mason County Saturday left one person dead and another injured, police said. Segred Renee Kabler, 22, of Dover, was driving a 1991 Honda Civic CRX west on Kentucky 8 at 1:42 a.m. Maysville police said she was apparently driving at a high rate of speed. Police said the vehicle sideswiped and scraped along the guardrail on the right side of the road for a considerable distance. The vehicle then crossed the roadway, ran up the embankment and went airborne, before coming to a rest on its side in the roadway, the report said. The driver was partially ejected through the driver's window and the vehicle came to rest on top of her, the report said. Rescue workers had to use the jaws of life to open the driver's side door in order to remove Kabler. Neither she nor her passenger, sister-in-law Crystal Kabler, 21, of Dover, were wearing seat belts, police said. Segred Kabler was pronounced dead at the scene by the Mason County Coroner. Her services will be held Tuesday at Dover Christian Church. Crystal Kabler was transported to Meadowview Regional Medical Center. She was then transferred by ambulance to the University of Kentucky Medical Center, where she was treated and released Saturday. The crash is under investigation by Maysville police, who were assisted at the scene by Mason County sheriff's deputies and Maysville Emergency Services personnel.
By LISA DUNBAR Staff Writer The driver of a vehicle which allegedly hit an overturned car at the scene of a fatal accident earlier in the month has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident. Valerie Stanton Shaw, 27, of Aberdeen, Ohio, was arrested Friday morning and taken to the Mason County Detention Center, said Maysville Police Detective Justin Horch. Shaw had already been charged for not having insurance. One of three passengers in Shaw's vehicle came forward May 22 and said they were at the scene and believed they hit the overturned vehicle of Segred Renee Kabler, 22, of Dover, on Kentucky 8 on May 18, said Police Chief Van Ingram. Prior to being hit by Shaw's vehicle, police said Kabler's 1991 Honda Civic CRX sideswiped and scraped along the guardrail on the right side of the road for a considerable distance. The vehicle then crossed the road, ran up the embankment and went airborne, before coming to a rest on its side in the roadway. Kabler was apparently traveling at a high rate of speed. After talking to the passenger, police impounded Shaw's gray, 1986 Ford Mustang and questioned Shaw, said Ingram. Police were able to confirm through statements and physical evidence that after the Kabler vehicle crashed, Shaw's vehicle did strike it and moved it about four feet, he said. Shaw got out of her vehicle, looked at the damage and then left the scene, said Ingram. Segred Kabler had been partially ejected through the driver's window and the vehicle came to rest on top of her. She was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the vehicle, sister-in-law Crystal Kabler, 21, also of Dover, was removed from the car using the jaws of life to open the driver's side door. She was transported to Meadowview Regional Medical Center and then transferred by ambulance to the University of Kentucky Medical Center. Neither of the women was wearing a seat belt, police said. The accident remains under investigation, said Horch.
