Ideas that Work From MRSMs

MRSM Terendak

*** Reading Competition    - students, teachers and  staff are invited to participate in this competition after the second broadcast on a first-come-first-served basis. Only 10 participants are allowed per session. They are to read over the PA system. Their identities are kept secret - they are identified by "Student 1", "Student 2" , etc or "Staff 1", "Staff 2".... The students and staff who register to read actually make an effort to learn the pronunciation of words before they go on air.  They read any one of the previous week's articles.  A few English teachers will listen to their reading over the PA and select the best 3 readers for the day and they each will receive a little prize.  Due to overwhelming response, the competition had to be divided into categories like male students only, female students only or staff only per session. The plus point of that exercise is that the readers actually make an effort to learn the proper pronunciation because they know they will go on air ... they would ask their English teachers before they read into the microphone.  What better way to get them to improve their reading and pronunciation.

***  Here is a filler activity for Week 2 articles.

***  An example of an EIA activity that promotes English across the curriculum is this quiz by the Homeroom Unit. This Unit gives quiz questions according to departments. Such activities are to be encouraged to ensure SEEDS is truly Schoolwide.

MRSM Kuala Klawang

***    Daily quizzes are held during recess. These quizzes are either handed out or read over the PA system. Small prizes are given to winners. The English Department have been generously sponsoring these prizes.

***    After their 10th week of PIES, prizes were presented to the best group in each of these categories : students, teachers, staff.

***    The Science Department give their support by having choral speaking during  "Tunas Saintis". Their notice board also has a section that is devoted to terminologies in BM and English

***    FEC activities - English teachers use some of the articles for cloze passage exercises  and have class discussions based on some articles.

***    Jan 31, 2002

A memorable day for MRSM Langkawi.  SEEDS launching was held at 8.30 a.m. to mark the beginning of SEEDS programme in MRSM Langkawi.  MRSM Langkawi is believed to be one of the earliest MRSMs to implement SEEDS in 2002.  The launching ended at 9.45 a.m.

English Fest proceeded at 10.00 a.m. with 12 competition booths opened to all students.  These fun-and-learning competitions include Scavenger Hunt, Grabble, Spelling Bee, Poem Recital, Singing Workshop, Crossword Puzzle, Win, Lose or Draw, Donkey's Tail, Poison Box and many more.  Those who participated were rewarded with 'smiley' stamps on their English Era card, and students will get to redeem their prizes after accumulating certain number of stamps.  On that day alone, some students even managed to collect up to 20 stars!  That is 10 stars away from a Bronze award!

MRSM Muar

***  This College has an adjective competition.  Groups are to come up with an adjective to describe the SEEDS Day.  These adjectives are put into a box and everyday the team asks the principal or assistant principal to pick an adjective to fill in the blank "It's a ..... SEEDS Day.  If the adjective picked is suitable and is used, then that group gets a little prize.  The kids instead of the teachers are given the task of coming up with 100 adjectives.  Besides it will encourage them to look into the thesaraus and dictionary.

***  In spite of the standardized tests in March 2002, the College continued with the broadcasts and R & R. Their test timetable  incorporates the requirements of PIES. It is this kind of commitment and seriousness that will make a difference to the success of the programme.

***  Here are some sample filler and FEC activities.

MRSM Muadzam Shah

A poem by Kate Louise Brown can be used for FEC while the comic strip is an example of an EIA activity done by a student. There is a filler activity based on Week 1 articles.
