Currently playing at the cinema village theater in New York is The Nomi Song. It is a documentary about super freak & performing artist Klaus Nomi who was one of the first counter tenors before they ever existed. This is a must see for anyone looking for inspiration. The Nomi Song gives us a look into the early New York downtown freak scene, with commentary from some original artist’s of the 70s & 80s like Kenny Scharf , Ann Magnus and many others. There are great scenes showing Fiorucci, the new wave/freak shop that launched the careers of many artists including Keath Hearing. Fiorucci was famous for freak models dancing in their store front window and having performances by Klaus at the shop. Nomi plus his backup singer, Joey Arias, performed live on Saturday Night Live with David Bowie and became more famous than ever. The documentary has lots of great footage of Nomi’s life and his unforgettable looks. It also gives you a sense of what a true outsider is and his journey to fame. Cinema Village is located at 22 E 12st.
