TWICE THE PAIN

Chapter One

Elladan stood on the balcony long after Haldir had ridden away. He didn’t say a word; he couldn’t say anything. The words he had heard kept running through his mind like a never ending loop:

“I would not want to have to warn you again. I did not find it pleasant at all.”

“I would not want to have to warn you again. I did not find it pleasant at all.”

“I would not want to have to warn you again. I did not find it pleasant at all.”

He watched Elrohir walk back to the house. His hands ached where he held the balcony railing so hard for so long. He still stood there long after his brother came in the house. He could not seem to move.

“Elladan, will you come to eat?” It was his father. “I’m sure Haldir will be all right.”

He turned and looked at his father. He went into the comforting arms of Elrond and cried until he could cry no more. He allowed his father to take him to his own room and put him to bed as if he were an elfling.

**

A new day brought no relief to the aching heart of the elder twin. Elrond, along with the rest of the house, assumed that his son was still upset at the condition of Haldir when he had been brought in. He allowed his son time to heal…

Elladan did heal… or at least, he came to accept what happened.

**

Elrohir stood at Elladan’s door. His twin had seldom spoken to him since Haldir had left. He missed him terribly.

“El’dan? Can I come in?” He didn’t expect to be admitted.

The door opened as Elladan crossed back to sit by the fireplace. He did not look at Elrohir. He didn’t say anything for a long time.

“What do you want?”

“I… we have to start talking. I –I miss you.” Elrohir was near tears.

“I have nothing to say to you, my *brother*… not one thing.”

“He…I … I didn’t want him to have you, El’dan. I love you.”

Elladan said nothing, refusing to even look at him. He gazed into the fire instead. Elrohir walked up behind him and began to massage his shoulders as he had always done. He could feel the knots of tension dissolve under his skilled hands. He leaned down and kissed his brother’s ear, gently biting the tip of his ear as he put his arms around Elladan from behind. Elladan did not hug back or acknowledge him but he also did not pull away.

Elrohir wanted Elladan, as badly as he always wanted him.

“Brother,” he whispered as he kissed Elladan’s cool cheek, “will you let me come to your bed? Will you let me love you?”

Elladan said nothing but he rose from his seat and began to remove his clothes. He closed his eyes as each piece of his clothing hit the floor. Elrohir couldn’t help but notice that tears slipped out the corners of his eyes. He led his older twin to the bed and lay him down on it. He stripped out of his own clothing and lay down beside Elladan.

“I love you…” Elrohir whispered as he kissed the lips he had kissed so often in the past. He ran his hand down his brother’s smooth chest to the other elf’s flaccid penis. He wrapped his fingers around it and stroked it slowly until it was hard and warm inside his hand. He looked up to see the same closed eyes and same tears dripping from Elladan’s face.

He kissed the tears away. Then he kissed his way down the hard, lean body of his beloved. Elladan was not made of stone. He responded, arching up when his brother ran his tongue up and down his length.

He never said a word as Elrohir took him into his mouth, deep into his throat. Elrohir let his tongue flatten and run up and down the pulsing vein as his hand ran up and down the shaft too. Elladan thrust into his throat, fisting handfuls of the sheet as he writhed beneath the one who knew how to please him more than anyone else.

He came, biting his lip to stop himself from crying out, sobbing as he rolled onto his side to let Elrohir finish. And he did… he used the lube he’d brought with him to ready Elladan and he slipped inside him gently but quickly as he had many times before.

Elrohir was lost the minute he was sheathed inside his brother’s tight heat. He gripped Elladan’s hips and began to move inside him, harder and faster with each thrust until pleasure, guilty pleasure washed over him again and again. All he could do was call out his brother’s name.

Both of them lay still in the glow of the fire. Elladan was crying silently as Elrohir held him and whispered to him how much he loved him. He finally fell asleep as the coals in the fireplace darkened and the moon rose.

Elrohir’s last thought was that he wished he could turn back time…but that was impossible. He hoped that they lived long enough for Elladan to forgive him. That seemed almost as impossible.

Elrohir came to Elladan’s room every night and made love to him every night. Elladan tried not to respond. He tried not to care. He tried not to love Elrohir. But he was lost every time his twin touched him or spoke his name in passion.

They both found that time passed and seasons changed, but the memory of those few days was etched on their minds. They did not speak of it. As a matter of fact, they seldom spoke at all. More precisely, Elladan seldom spoke. Elrohir spoke for both of them.

**

“My sons, I do not know what has happened to make you both seem shadows of your former selves.” Their mother had bid them come to her rooms after dinner. She was getting ready to go to Lothlórien for an extended visit and hated to leave her sons in such sad shape.

“We are fine, Mother,” Elrohir said as he kissed her cheek. Elladan touched his cheek briefly to hers though he didn’t kiss her.

“No, you are not but I do not think you are going to tell me what is the matter. Do me one favor, please.”

They said nothing, just waited to see what she would say.

“Do not ever stop loving one another. No matter what happens, take care of one another. Love is the most important thing there is, my sons. Never forget that.”

**

The next day they left Imladris to ride escort with their Mother to visit her parents. There was nothing unusual in the trip. They kept watch behind, usually not even in the camp itself but half a mile or so back so no one could slip up from behind. They had camped at a stream. Elrohir woke early and reached for Elladan, who came willingly to his arms.

They heard the screams and dressed as they ran for their horses. When they reached the main campsite, they saw such a massacre as they had never seen before. As they ran frantically from one elf to the next, they found them all dead and mutilated.

At last, they came upon one elf that was still breathing. She had been stripped and staked to the ground. Her body was slimy with blood and other fluids and black with bruises.

Elrohir tried to call for Elladan but found that this time it was he who could not speak as he looked at the bruised and raped body of his mother, staked to ground and left to die, just as he had left Haldir.

Elladan saw him kneeling on the ground and ran toward him, pulling up short when he saw his mother.

“Wha—oh, by the Valar--- let’s get her home.”

He looked at Elrohir and saw the silent sobs wrack his body. He touched his brother’s shoulder and then began to remove the stakes from the ground gently and cutting his mother loose. She opened her eyes and looked up at them then looked away.

“Leave me. I am already dead,” she croaked at them.

“No, Mother. We will take you to Father. He will be able to heal you.”

“It is too much. He cannot fix this. They have killed me… please leave me.”

But she knew they would not, as they knew they could not.

**

Elrond’s heart was broken at the sight of his wife. She was barely clinging to life. He had her taken to their rooms immediately.

“Sons, take some of the others back with you to retrieve the bodies. We cannot leave them for the animals.”

Elrohir finally spoke. “Ada, will she be all right?”

Elrond saw the hopefulness in his son’s eyes but he knew that she would never be the same. He wasn’t even sure that she would live. He couldn’t lie to his son.

“I do not know. Her injuries are very grave. I fear for her.”

Elrohir’s expression turned hard and cold.

“We shall kill them all then. We will hunt them down and slaughter them as they did our people.” He looked at Elladan. “Are you with me?”

Elladan said little anyway, and this time, he simply nodded.

They rode away. First they helped load the dead on wagons to return them home for burial then they left on a quest that would take them many, many years.
