We Are Not Alone
Fiona Apple
Fiona was the victim of rape carried out on her when she was 12, outside her mothers apartment.  She developed an eating disorder in reaction to her rape, as she did not wish to have a body that could be "grabbed".   She was able to overcome this due to the medias attack on her.  After her first bad review for her album "Tidal" she began to scratch her wrists, these scratches then extended to her arms.  She stated "I am going to give myself the pain to put the punctuation on this shit thats going on inside", it was never about trying to put herself in hospital.  Fiona still gets upset at bad reviews, but does not mention any reactions involving self injury.  "The most annoying thing for me to hear about myself is  that I'm trying to make people have a pity party for me".  Fiona has more confidence in herself now and its a great artist who should be listened to and admired. (Albums include "when the pawn" and "tidal")

Everyone can hurt.  Just because these people are famous does not mean that it a condoned act against one self.  Everyone should make their own choices in life.
Johnny Depp
Johnny Depp is known for his bad boy behaviour, but that is more than likely in his past as he is now a dedicated partner to Vanessa Paradis and dedicated father to their daughter.  From reading a number of interviews it is possible to assume that he suffers from low self esteem and considers himself as a no hoper, a lucky one at that.  He has around 8 scars on his left forearm from cutting himself to commemorate certain moments or rights of passage in his life.  It was not just bad times that he did this, it was also good times, it did not matter.  "There were many years I was feeling at a loss about my life or how I grew up.  I couldnt understand what is right or what is precious.  At that time I was so miserable and self-defeating.  I was feeling angry with various things.  My anger came up to the surface then.  I don't say such tendency has disappeared.  Even now there are anger and dark in myself.  But its the first time I've been so close to the light".
Christina Ricci
Christina Ricci's big break was in "mermaids", she has since been in numerous films and as an actress she is well known for such a young age.  She has a small, smile shaped scar on her hand from trying to impress her best friend when she was younger.  In revealing other burn scars on her arms, she stated "I wanted to see if I can handle pain.  Is sort of an experiment to see if I can handle pain".  When asked if her injury hurt, she stated no,that it was an endorphin rush.  She has also described her injury as "like having a drink but quicker".  It helped her cope with her anxiety and her poor self image due to her breasts which were larger than numerous girls her age - in films she would have to strap them down to appear younger.  "When I was younger, I did self mutilate.  I'd be upset, so I'd do it, and it would calm me down.  It's a horrible way to feel better.  But there are two parts of your brain - one that really wants to destroy the other.  And sometimes the idea of self-destruction is very romantic.  I got over that."
Shirley Manson
As a child Shirley was beaten up, tormented and teased because of her looks - she was called "frog eyes" and "bloodhound" due to her green eyes and red hair.  She was made to feel "less than human" and it had went to far.  She began smoking, picking up boys and drinking, she also used drugs in her late teens on a regular basis.  In an interview she stated that she was ugly and demanded someone pin a bomb to her head.  "I wouldnt say that cutting was pleasurable, but there is a sense of euphoria that follows cutting yourself.  The quick pinch of pain and the sight of blood, snaps you back to the surface and you start to appreciate being alive."  She no longer injures, but deals with the urges.  "I ran to my dressing room in floods of tears.  I hated myself all over again for not being thin enough or having a perfect body.  It hurt so much that suddenly cutting started to make sense again" - when she felt homesick and tired on her 1998 European tour. "I've seen kids with cigarette burns on their arms or gashes on their legs.  It kills me, but hopefully my coming forward can help a little." (shirley is the singer/songwriter in "Garbage".
