SELF INJURY

Parasuicide, self mutilation, self harm, self injury, self destruction....so many terms for the same thing..

In my opinion self-harm may include anything that causes harm to oneself in any way.

*Cutting
*Burning
*Interfering with wounds
*Eating disorders
*Breaking bones
*Promiscuity
*Abuse of chemical substances
*Abuse of alcohol
*Abuse of your body in any way possible
The list goes on.........and with these         physical forms of injury also comes negative    thoughts about oneself.

Anything that we do to make ourselves feel more negative about ourself is causing ourselves harm.  We need to have this addressed.  We need at some point in our lives to stop being our worst enemy.

Who Does Self Injury Effect?

Self injury can effect anyone at any age.  The most common age range that self injure are young adults, though it is possible to show signs of forms of injury from a very young age.

There is help for those who self injure.  It is something that is sometimes considered to still be a taboo subject, but this continues to change with time.

How Can I Get Help?

The main point to note in getting help with regards to your self injury is that there are options, the only requirement we need to make full use of these options is patience, with yourself - give yourself the chance to get help.  If first you dont succeed, do try again, dont give up. Below is some options.

Help Via your Doctor -

*You going to your local Health Centre

* The Doctor will assess you intially and may refer you to a psychiatrist as well as possibly prescribing medication.

* The psychiatrist will then again assess you and review the medication the doctor may have began you on, he may also refer you to a psychologist/therapist.

* The psychologist/therapist will ask you to talk about yourself and will not have much of an overall input on what you talk about.  It is more focused on what you would actually like to share with the psychologist and they will help you explore different areas in more depth.

Help Via a Counsellor at school/Uni/College/Private -

* The Counsellor will be very like the psychologist but will not necessarily hold the position of being a doctor, but will have training in psychology and will have the ability to help you explore different areas of your life (emotionally) in more depth.  The benefits of a Counsellor in a school or further education setting is that they are a free service.  For more information you should check out your uni's students union or school facilities.

Many counselling services are mentioned in telephone directories but will charge a fee for their services.  Make sure they have a commendable qualification through a proper counselling examination body.

Help Via a Support Group -

* It is possible to do a search on the internet to look for Self Injury support groups in your area.  It is also possible to ring up your local Mental Health Association to find out if there are support groups in your area for either Self Injury or under the more general heading of Mental health support groups.  These are not necessarily lead by a health professional, but member of the public who has experienced mental health problems or self injury personally or has a close friend/family member who has.
