Note: This roster is based on a transcription of the Descriptive Book of Co. C, 8th Battalion SC Reserves. This unit was raised in Barnwell District in mid-1864, and was comprised of 17-year old boys and men between the ages of 45 and 50. The company was called to active duty in July 1864, under the command of Captain William W. Hutto of Blackville, and was sent to guard Federal prisoners of war at Charleston. When yellow fever broke out in that city in the fall of 1864, Hutto's company was ordered to take the prisoners to Columbia, where they remained until that city was evacuated at the approach of Federal forces under Major General William T. Sherman in February 1865. Thereafter, its history is unclear, but it seems likely that the company escorted the prisoners to Charlotte, NC, when they were sent there by railroad several days prior to the fall of Columbia. Confederate Army regulations required each company to maintain a Descriptive Book listing its officers, non-commissioned officers, and privates, along with their physical descriptions, and registers of transfers, discharges, deaths, and deserters. Maintenance of all company records, including the Descriptive Book, was normally the responsibility of the Orderly Sergeant, assisted by the Company Clerk. The exact provenance of Company C's Descriptive Book is not known, but after the war it was apparently kept by the family of the unit's last commander, First Lieutenant C. Clark Cooper, of Bamberg, SC. At some point, it was donated by Miss Lillie Cooper of Denmark, to a relic room founded by Confederate veterans at Rivers Bridge, and remained there until the site was acquired by the South Carolina State Park Service in 1988. At that time, the materials in the relic room were removed to the Charles Towne Landing Historic Site in Charleston, where they are currently stored. The original book is of paper construction with cardboard covers, and measures approximately 7 by 11 inches. It is in fair condition with some water staining, but is missing its front cover and several pages. The author wishes to express his sincere appreciation to Mr. Daniel J. Bell, Historic Resource Coordinator at the South Carolina State Park Service, for informing me of the existence of this priceless poece of history, making this material available, and for generously allowing the use of his facilities at Charles Towne Landing for its transcription. It is modestly hoped that the resulting work will be of some value to genealogists, as well as to other researchers with an interest in the War Between the States in South Carolina.
