Perryman's Battalion

Perryman, William W. (1831-1890), Colonel, was a resident of New Market, near Greenwood, Abbeville District, and raised a company of infantry ("Secession Guards") in April 1861. His company was sent to Charleston, where it served briefly with the 7th SC Infantry, and was then ordered to report to COL J. B. Kershaw in VA, where it became Co. F, 2d SC Infantry. Perryman served with his company until about Jun 1862, when he contracted typhoid fever and was sent home on sick furlough. Declared unfit for further field service, he was assigned to duty as an enrolling officer in SC, first at Charleston, and later at Greenville, where he was also the Commandant of the Post.

From records in General Chesnut's Letterbook, it appears that several companies from Ballenger's and Barnett's Battalions were assigned to Perryman at Greenville in Aug 1864, in order to guard the passes from NC from threatened raids, and perhaps to assist in rounding up draft-dodgers and deserters. I suspect that "Perryman's Battalion" was the unofficial name given to the companies from Ballenger's and Barnett's Battalions Battalions that were assigned to Perryman. As an enrolling officer, he also commanded a "supporting force," and as post commander, a regiment of detailed men in Greenville, but given the ages of the men, they appear to be from the Reserve Battalions, rather than the supporting force or detailed men.
After the war, Perryman and his brother, Richard M. Perryman, moved their families to Texas.
