Anton Chekov Anton Chekov -(1860-1904) Russian dramatist and author of short stories. His famours plays include Uncle Vanya, The Three Sisters, The Cherry Orchard and The Sea Gull. I don't know which short stories are the best, since I've only read a few. I did see a re-making of "Uncle Vanya", though. It was a movie that Anthony Hopkins directed and acted in, enititled August. Someone had used the translation and turned it into a screenplay that takes place in Wales in the early 20th century. I recommend it- watched it twice, and the second time I used a script of the original Chekhov. Many of the lines were preserved, and I would say the entirety of the mood and purpose of the play was beautifully played out. Hopkins' interpretation of Uncle Vanya's character were wonderful enhancements of traits only hinted at in the play. All names are Welsh forms of the Russian in the movie- another interesting twist. Go see it!
