Head Shots. Is there a such thing as a perfect one?

What about Head Shots?

The search for the perfect head shot often takes up much more time and money than it's worth. Don't go too overboard on this.

The following guidelines might be helpful:
  1. A picture should look the best you can look, usually. Not the best you can possibly look, but a representation that sells you honestly but positively.

  2. Pictures should try to convey not just how you look, but a sense of personality. What's personality? You know it when you see it..but it's a picture that has a little life to it.

  3. The neck-up head shot is a thing of the past. We like to see body in the shot, what's called 3/4. It gives us a better sense of you.

  4. The wacky 'character' shot is the single most amateurish thing an actor can do. Let us see what you look like and use our imagination for the rest. Wacky drunk shots end up in the trash.

  5. Don't spend more than $400-$500 dollars on your first shots and less than that if you can. The difference between a decent head shot and a really good one is not enough to get you in the door by itself. As well, the advice of your new agents (when you get them) is more often that not "Get new head shots." So don't make too much of an investment.

  6. Before agreeing to the shoot, ask the photographer if she'll shoot another roll for cost, if you don't like the initial results. Most will agree.

  7. BACKSTAGE is a good place to start looking for a photographer. Be sure to visit and take a look at the photographer's book.
