HOME

Welcome to the Internet Genealogical Bookshop. Our aim is to help you trace family and local history by stocking the guides, handbooks, indexes, transcripts, etc., which best tell you how to do it. Our proprietor is Stuart Raymond, who is well known as an authoritative and prolific writer of genealogical textbooks, bibliographies, and web guides. In addition to his own books, he has personally identified everything listed here as being worthy the attention of family and local historians. If you cannot find what you are seeking on these pages, he stands ready to advise you on other titles which may be of use to you.

Books provide essential guidance for genealogists, and many original sources are available in print. Thousands of genealogical books are now available; these pages describe titles from some of the major publishers. The most important books listed here are undoubtedly Raymond's series of British Genealogical Library Guides. Why? Because they provide the essential guidance you need in order to find your way through the maze of printed books and microfiche that are available in libraries. There are hundreds of thousands of works out there, each one of which may have information relevant to your family history. How are you going to identify those which are relevant without an adequate listing?

Introducing Family History

By Stuart A. Raymond. 146 pages. ISBN 1-86006-196-6.

Every family has a history. Most of us know something about our parents and our grandparents, but there is usually much more information that could be discovered. That information can be fascinating, and often explains why things were the way they were in our childhood.

Family history has become much easier to research in the last few years. Some of the most important sources are now available at the click of a mouse on the Internet. However, a basic understanding of these sources is still essential if you are to trace your family tree. Price £8.95. If you wish to order a copy, see below for ordering procedure.

Web Guides

The most popular books on this site are Raymond's series of Web Directories, and especially Family History on the Web: an internet directory for England & Wales. These provide expert guidance to the most useful web sites currently available, and are far more useful than the alternative of spending hours on search engines that throw hundreds of irrelevant sites at you.

If the books you need are not listed here, please let us know. We may still be able to obtain them for you. We aim to post orders within a week, although out of stock titles may take a little longer. The Internet Genealogical Bookshop also has a stand on Genfair and a shop on Ebay. The latter lists many single items which are not regularly stocked, and which therefore do not appear on these pages. This includes some second-hand material.

Many other titles of potential interest are listed on the Internet Genealogical Bookshop's Amazon Associates page. These pages are at present in an early stage of development. The long-term aim is to list the most important titles on British history in general, and also to creat listings of some of the major county and local histories currently available. The county pages on this site will also include many publications of original sources issued by record societies and similar bodies. These are often of great value for family and local historians, but do not get the attention they deserve. Unlike most affiliate sites, I will not be afraid of listing titles for which no illustration is available. Amazon likes its glitzy affiliate websites, and they do look attractive - but the lack of an illustration has no bearing whatsoever on the quality of the book being advertised. So I hope that the lack of an illustration will not put you off!

If you don't know which books you need to consult, then well-known genealogical bibliographer and librarian Stuart Raymond is ready to offer his advice on where to find the information you require. Email him (see address below) or if you are in Britain, phone (01392) 252193.

If you wish to order a book, please email us at: samjraymond@btopenworld.com stating your snail-mail address and the title you wish to order. Books ordered in the UK will be sent with an invoice for payment on receipt. Overseas customers may also pay by sterling cheque. Payment may also be made via Paypal, in any currency. Just ask us to issue a Paypal invoice, and follow the instructions when you receive it.
