History

Samoa College was setup in 1953 by the Government of NZ as a gift to the Government and people of Western Samoa. Its aim was to educate the future leaders of the country.

The school motto is " Atamai e Tautua mo Samoa " which translates to
" Through Knowledge to Achievement to serve Samoa "

Samoa College is the top Government Secondary School in the Independent State of Samoa ( formerly Western Samoa ). It is a co-educational institution located at Vaivase which is about a 10 minute drive from downtown Apia. The bus fare for students still remains at 20 sene , while it costs an adult 50 sene.

The classes range from Year 9 ( formerly Form 3 ) to Year 13 ( formerly Form 6 ) which is equivalent to the high schools in the U.S. The whole school is divided into 4 houses named after important events in the history of the country. During the school year , these houses compete against each other in various events like Samoan Culture day , English Competition , Athletics , Quizzing etc. All these events determine the winning house at the end of the year. Once you are allocated to a house , you remain a member till your dying day.

The Houses are

Calliope , which is named after the British naval vessel HMS Calliope.

Stevenson , after the Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson who died in Samoa.

Vaea , after the Mountain on which R. L. Stevenson was buried.

and finally Williams , after the missionary John Williams who introduced Christianity to Samoa.
