My Gaming Worlds

I have a number of gaming worlds I have started work on. Most have not gotten very far, but might be of interest to others, at least as far as concepts to play with. I'm open to feedback and ideas on them. I don't promise I'll use it, but I'll at least read your ideas. Also, feel free to create spin offs. Most of my worlds are spin offs of other people's work so I really can't claim exclusive ownership.

An important note on my use of place names for my worlds; I use a lot place names and geographic & political names from a wide variety of science fiction and fantasy novels. All such names are property of their appropiate owners. My use is more for my convience. It allows me to keep track of a mental image of what I want to draw upon. Eventually I will be replacing such names with ones of my own creatation. I will also be listing all the books, movies, etc I have drawn upon.

In the standard fantasy genre, I have three settings based upon unusual geography. So far there is nothing that is rule specific, although I was looking at Guardians of Order Tri-Stat as the game system. I recently aquiured their Big Eyes, Small Mouths game system which is sort of a subset of Tri-Stat dX and really like the looks of the rules. There are a number of other sites dedicated to BESM and similar. I have a BESM / Tri Stat index page. It has links to other people's pages and to my non-campaign specific material about BESM. There is also a d20 index page for non-campaign specific material about d20. Mostly issues dealing problems in the d20 rules with regards to campaigns and world creation. One of my problems is that I want my worlds to "work" without lots of hand waving. Oh, magic exists, and has a major effect, but such effects should be world wide. Thus, my worlds tend to take a long time and I try and put a lot of real world background and history into them.

The first is Spire, which takes place on a small plateau that is roughly 20 to 40 miles above the rest of the planet. Only the plateau is inhabitable. The geography is based upon Larry Niven's Mountlookatthat. This is on the back burner for now.

The second is Sky World, which takes place on islands that are floating in the sky. The planet underneath is far enough down in the atmosphere as to be uninhabitable. This is also on the back burner. Much of the work on Oceana though can be used for Sky World. Travel is more difficult, but not impossible. I'm thinking of making teleportation easy on that world. This world is the most fantasic of the ones I've started work on. Floating islands that apparently don't draw power need at least some explanation.

The third world is Oceana, which is a world ocean with lots of relatively small scattered islands. The geography is similar to Ursula K. Leguin's Earth Sea world, or the BESM world setting Uresaia. This is the world I'm currently working on. As of February 2005 it is undergoing a major change. As such, some material will not fit with other posted material. The current rule set is going to be d20, mostly because there is so much material for the system already out there.

In a more modern setting, I have two settings for a psionics campaign. The rules system was initially Psi World by Fantasy Games Unlimited. I was thinking of converting Psi World to d20 but have given that up as a lost cause. Psionics in Psi World is sufficiently different from the Wizard's of the Coast d20 psionics system as to make a conversion impossible. All you could do is eliminate the d20 psionics as spells system and replace it entirely with a powers system. Note that from the published information about d20 Babylon 5, they also dumped the d20 psionics system and created their own telepath system. The d20 Babylon 5 telepath system appears to be closer to Psi World, so if somebody really wants to make a conversion, that is probably the place to start. Converting Psi World to Tri-Stat dX or BESM would actually be simpler. Each of the Psi World psychic powers is a special ability costing the appropate points, such as telekinesis, teleport, etc. Converting stats from Psi World to BESM would be a little tougher, but would be a closer mechanic with regards to the psionics.

The Psi Plague setting takes place roughly 20 years from now after a plague has killed 40% to 60% of the Earth's population. At the same time the plague has created people with powerful and demonstrable psionic abilities. This is a late First Generation / Emergence setting.

The Dolist setting is not time dependent really, but I assume takes place roughly 40 years in the future. Most of the world is in an economic depression similar to what the US and Europe saw in the late 1970s. There is high inflation, lots of government bureaucracy and high taxes. The middle class has been squeezed very hard and the gap between poor and rich has grown. The cities tend to be dangerous and except for the government district, a middle class person does not visit most parts of the city. Most of the city residents are on some sort of welfare, or the dole. Upper and middle class people all live in gated suburban communities. To add to the social unrest, psi powers have started to crop up. It is a world of government agencies, big businesses and secret societies. It could be considered cyber-punk, except the tech level is much more present day or even less developed.

Each setting has a list of fiction books I've drawn from for developing the setting. The references and source books for each setting can be accessed from the setting index pages. In addition, I've created a list of books I've read over the years. I have started yet another section of the website for temporarily discarded gaming material. It will start out with old Oceana files, but who knows what will end up there. I have found that I have to re-create stuff every few years, so at least now most of the work will already have been done and kept.

There are a number of fantasy or science fiction settings that I think would be fun to explore. The oldest setting I have wanted to see converted into a gaming world is Earthsea, created by Ursula K. LeGuin. As far as I know there has been no licensed version in any gaming system. With this section I'm trying to layout what would need to be modified from d20 or other systems to run a campaign in her world.

Over the years I've developed a number of opinions and about various subjects related to gaming. I've started to put them on the web as mini-essays. Most are works in progress, and subject to change when new inforamation is developed. Even if you are not interested in my opinions, you might be interested in the links at the end of each article. On the same page are also mini-essays on various gaming topics.

I joined a fantasy and science fiction world design Yahoo Group, world-design in 2004. In late 2004 the group started on it's first shared world. A copy of the Shared World process and such is also hosted on this site.

My characters for various campaigns. Not very interesting, and more as a way to share with various GMs.
