Come on a sailing
adventure, a fulfilment of dreams, a discovery of
potential, possibilities, of love - for the oceans and their precious wildlife, for
the people who live with the sea, for the sheer pleasure of
sailing to an unknown land; for the discovery of life
itself. |
"Dione Approaching Lizard Island, Qld.
Australia - 26th October, 1998"
For Glen and I
(Sue), Dione is many things;
she is home, she is freedom, she is travel, adventure,
exhilaration and discovery. She captured our hearts first, then
our minds. Now, she has our spirit, the essence of who we are,
etched into her lines and her finish, resting, waiting, in her
rigging and sails, glowing warmly in her comfortable, lamplit living
areas; the three of us, waiting to be set free.
For othersDione
is a 40' sailing boat, an Adams 40, built in Sydney, Australia,
based now in Auckland, New Zealand. Glen and I have had the pleasure
of her company since March, 1997. Her design blends traditional sea-worthiness
and 'know-how' with modern concepts of sailing efficiency,
a testament to her designer's own vast experience at sea in craft of
every kind.
In
ancient Greek mythology, Dione was one of the wives of the great
god Zeus, mother of Aphrodite and goddess of the sea. Dione and
Poseiden ruled the great sea world of the Greeks,
conjuring maritime terrors like Scylla and Charybdis to test the
hearts of mortal sailors seeking safe passage; men like Odysseus - a
king among men, a mere plaything of the gods. It is a story that
speaks in ancient lyric form not only of mortality but also of
a very modern ill - the abuse of a sacred trust; man alone has been
given the powers to preserve and protect the earth and all her
treasures; man alone seeks not to preserve and protect but to
destroy, to his own enrichment, the world entrusted to his
care.
We live fulltime on Dione and sail to see the world, her
stunning lands, her incredible creatures, her many
peoples. In choosing a simpler life we don't
seek to right the wrongs of the world. We seek ways to raise
awareness of the interdependence of all life and this great planet
Earth and we hope to contribute as little as possible to the
damage modern living causes. A sailboat uses the wind and the
sun and the ocean currents for power; with that power we live
comfortably and can travel almost anywhere. The sun's
power makes our water, our electricity and our heat; the winds and
ocean currents guide our travels, filling our sails and our minds
with possibility.
Here, you can come Sailing
With Dione - travel with us to
the places we have
been
, see the
ins and outs of an ocean cruising sailboat, peek
behind the scenes at
the people we are , and share our plans for the
next great adventure
(RimTrek 2002
). Glen
and I hope you enjoy our world; we would love you to
contact us
with comments and
stories of your own. Enjoy!
Glen & Sue
Kerr.
