Welcome my page on
culture shock, and reverse culture shock!

What is culture shock?

Culture shock is not something you feel right
away when you change your environment!

Culture shock is a feeling of depression, rage,
or other uncomfortable feeling due to a change
in environment, usually occuing 3-5 months
after arrival.

Recognizing culture shock

Many people have a hard time understanding the feelings they experience
in a new environment. They may become anxious or have mood swings and
not understand why.

Others find themselves constantly complaining about the people around them and feel
 like everyone is against them.

Coping with culture shock

The first step to coping with culture shock is understanding it.
Once recognition is made that the feelings experienced are
due to culture shock, the unusual feelings become validated
and one no longer wonders where the feelings are coming from.

Pesonal Experience

My experience of culture shock hit me after being in Japan for 5 months. I became easily irratated,
and began to feel like all Japanese people were against me. I wanted school to be formatted the same
way as at UCI and I wanted other Americans around to share my frustrations with.

But the hardest and most suprising type of culture shock is
REVERSE cultue shock!!!
