EPISODE: HEROES AND DEMONS

Annular confinement beam - There is a breach in the annular confinement beam when Torres tries to beam samples from the protostar. (Heroes and Demons)

Atuta - Freya says that this is a very powerful plant that they brew into a broth and drink before battle; it brings on the spirit of the bear and gives them strength to swing their swords; the Doctor says that it is amanita muscaria which is a fungus that is quite poisonous and is more likely to bring on profuse sweating, convulsions, and acute delirium. Bewoulf - An epic earth poem set in 6th century Denmark in which Bewoulf fights a creature name Grendel; Kim plays Bewoulf in a holodeck simulation; the Doctor participates in the Bewoulf program in order to rescue Kim, Chakotay, and Tuvok from the photonic energy life form. (Heroes and Demons)

Freya (Marjorie Monaghan) - A shield maiden and daughter of King Hrothgar in the Bewoulf program; she befriends the Doctor and is stabbed and killed by Unferth while trying to protect the Doctor. (Heroes and Demons)

Great Hall - The Great Hall is the dark and gloomy residence of King Hrothgar; it was once a beautiful place before Grendel came. (Heroes and Demons)

Grendel - Grendel is a monster that comes by night to the Great Hall and drags warriors to his lair; the life form made of phontonic energy appears as Grendel in Kim's holodeck program. (Heroes and Demons)

Heatho-Bards - Freya asks the Doctor if he has heard about her campaign against the Heatho-Bards to the south. (Heroes and Demons)

Herb lore - Freya says that the Doctor is a master of herb lore since he seems to know so much about Akuta. (Heroes and Demons)

Hrothgar, King (Michael Keenan) - King in the Bewoulf epic in Kim's holodeck program; he was 11 years old when he made his first kill in battle. (Heroes and Demons)

Magnetic containment field - The Doctor will have complete control of his magnetic containment field while he is on the holodeck; this will allow the Doctor to make himself solid or let matter pass through himself at will. (Heroes and Demons)

Matter conversion - Torres believes that Kim, Chakotay and Tuvok may have undergone this process and been converted into energy. (Heroes and Demons)

Molecular pattern - Janeway hopes that Kim, Chakotay, and Tuvok's molecular patterns might still be in the holodeck and that they might be able to rematerialize them. (Heroes and Demons)

Monsters - Tuvok notes that the ancient earth culture from the epic Bewoulf seems to be fascinated with monsters; Chakotay says that every culture has it own demons with embody the darkest emotions of its people. (Heroes and Demons)

Neural net - Torres and Paris discover that the sample from the protostar has a neural net which indicates that they are dealing with a lifeform. (Heroes and Demons)

Parinisti Measles - The Doctor tells King Hrothgar and the other warriors about the time he stopped the Parinisti Measles before it became epidemic. (Heroes and Demons)

Photonic energy - Minute quantities of photonic energy escaped from the containment field when it was beamed aboard Voyager; this energy finds its ways into the holodeck and other ship's systems; Voyager discovers that this energy was really a lifeform. (Heroes and Demons)

Photonic lattice - The photonic energy life forms are trying to return to the photonic lattice near the protostar. (Heroes and Demons)

Protostar - Voyager altered course when they detected photonic matter activity around a nearby protostar. (Heroes and Demons)

Rakella Prime - The Bok'sha live on Rakella Prime. (Heroes and Demons)

Schweitzer - This is the name that the Doctor choses for himself; Freya says that it is a warrior's name; the Doctor decides not to keep this name because he didn't want to be reminded of Freya's death. (Heroes and Demons)

Scyld - Freya tells the Doctor about Scyld the Dar-Gane whose hall she burned to the ground. (Heroes and Demons)

Synaptic pattern - A synaptic pattern was produced in the sample from the protostar when a a polarization field was introduced into the sample container. (Heroes and Demons)

Talisman - The Doctor tells Freya that the container he is carrying the photonic energy life form in is a talisman that will defeat Grendel. (Heroes and Demons)

Unferth (Christopher Neame) - Unferth is the chief warrior in King Hrothgar's kingdom; he challenges the Doctor to battle and is injured when the Doctor allows Unferth's sword to pass through him; Unferth stabs and kills Freya when she steps in to protect the Doctor; Unferth steals the "talisman" since he believes the Doctor is in league with Grendel. Vok'sha - The Vok'sha of Rakella Prime believe that hate is a beast that lives inside the stomach; one of their greatest mythical heroes is a man who ate stones for 23 days to kill the beast and then became a saint. (Heroes and Demons)

Vulcan - Tuvok says that Vulcan literature does not have any demons in it; Chakotay says that that might account for its popularity. (Heroes and Demons)
