Each New Year's Day, the world focuses its attention on Pasadena, California, U.S.A., home of the Tournament of Roses® Parade and Rose Bowl Game®. It's a celebration that's more than a century old--a festival of flowers, music and sports unequaled anywhere in the world. The Tournament is more than just a parade and football game. It's America's New Year Celebration, a greeting to the world on the first day of the year, and a salute to the community spirit and love of pageantry that have thrived in Pasadena for more than a century. In August 1970,the C.E.King band received an invitation to march in the 1971 Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena,Ca.During the next few months, the parents & students raised the funds to sent the 120 students to Pasadena for the parade. We chartered 5 busses for the 8 day trip and drove non stop to California, only stopping for meals and to change drivers. While in Ca. the band made visits to Marineland of the Pacific, Universal Studios,& Disney Land. They led the night time parade at Disney Land and participated in the N.B.C. marching contest,(for all the High School bands that were in the Rose Parade) in which they placed second. We stayed in the dorms at U.C.L.A.
