Now for the bad news. It turns out that these titles, which are to be released on August 24th, will be exclusive to Best Buy stores. There has been speculation as to why MGM made this puzzling decision, when they could make just as much money (if not more!) by selling them in every major store, but for those of you with a Best Buy in the area, consider yourselves lucky!
And apparently Elite's superb Millenium Edition just isn't enough, because Fox has decided to release yet another edition of George A. Romero's classic Night of the Living Dead on the same date. Included will be both the original black-and-white version and a newly colorized version in Dolby Mono sound. As for extras, there will be commentary by MST3K commentator Mike Nelson, a "Celebrity Zombie" game, and trailers for other horror films. As in the above releases, retail will be $14.95.
Following the success of their previous Monster Legacy Collections, Universal has plans to continue with three more: The Creature From the Black Lagoon (includes The Creature From the Black Lagoon, Revenge of the Creature, and The Creature Walks Among Us), The Mummy (includes The Mummy, The Mummy's Hand, The Mummy's Tomb, The Mummy's Ghost, and The Mummy's Curse), and The Invisible Man (includes The Invisible Man, The Invisible Man Returns, The Invisible Man's Revenge, The Invisible Agent, and The Invisible Woman). Extras will be similar to those from the previous collections and the sets will retail for $26.95 a piece. Not bad for an average of five classics!
Cutting in on the horror delights is Columbia Tri-star, who plan on releasing two King features on October 5th - Stephen King's Kingdom Hospital (with a retail price of $49.95) and Christine: SE.
And probably the best news of the day comes from Warner Home Video, who's announcement was a big shock to horror fans: also on October 5th, they will be releasing He Knows You're Alone, The Hunger, It's Alive, It's Alive II: It Lives Again / It's Alive III: Island of the Alive (double feature) and Return of the Living Dead Part II. On the same day, also expect a two-disc special edition of the Halle Berry horror Gothika.
And finally, MGM will be releasing an all-new edition of Species on October 19th. It will include an anamorphic transfer; DD 5.1 and DTS surround audio' commentary with director Roger Donaldson and actors Michael Madsen and Natasha Henstridge' another commentary with Donaldson, producer Frank Mancuso Jr., visual effects supervisor Richard Edlund, and makeup effects creator Steve Johnson; a sneak-peek of Species III, and a theatrical trailer. It will retail for $14.95.
