Raxl: "Maljardin. Another night of terror. Again the screaming
protests of a dying man. And the Island again knows evil as Matt the man of God who has found his faith plunges to his death from
the towers of Maljardin."
In the Great Hall Alison looks at the others. "What was
that?" "It sounded like someone
falling!" Jean Paul says. "Matt!
Matt!" Elizabeth screams. Jean
Paul, Tim and Alison rush out the door to the outside. "She killed him!" Elizabeth
screams. Raxl bends down and
touches the floor. When she stands her hand is covered in blood. "Like my hand,
this Island is being washed in blood. That is what the future holds for all of
you." Elizabeth turns away upset.
"No!" she cries out. She is sobbing.
Holly walks over to her mother and puts her arm around her. "Come
mother." "And I am powerless to
help you." says Raxl. "Come on.
I'll take you to your room." Holly says.
"I can't move." Elizabeth cries out. "Yes, yes you can. Come along." Holly
tries to lead her to the staircase.
Erica is walking down the stairs. "He jumped from the tower. He killed
himself." she tells them. Raxl
angrily walks towards her.
Elizabeth sees Erica and screams. "Don't let her near me." "She's..." Holly looks at Erica. "She's terribly upset. Like we all are.
Take her to her room Holly." Erica says walking past them. Holly starts walking up the staircase
with her mother. She stops and looks back at Erica. "Are you all right
Erica?" "Yes, yes I'm all right."
Erica says with her back towards Holly.
"Jean Paul went outside." says Holly. "Come along mother." Climbing the steps Elizabeth stops. "I
don't want to see her again! Ever again!" Elizabeth cries out. Holly leads her up the staircase. Erica turns and looks at Raxl. "You
know, don't you?" "Yes, I've known
for a long time." Raxl replies. "I
doesn't matter. My powers are stronger than yours. You know that." Erica says
walking up to Raxl. "I know you are
in league with that demon Jacques Eloi Des Mondes." Raxl says pointing at
Jacques portrait. "And you have deceived my Master." "Your Master made a bargain with Jacques
of his own volition." "For your
return he has trades his soul." Raxl says to Erica. "Of his own will." "For his wife, for her return from the
dead. But you are not that wife. You are a spirit of evil sent to destroy
him." "He has already destroyed
himself." says Erica. What do you
want?" Raxl asks her. "Immortality,
eternal life. I want to live for thousands of years as you have lived for
hundreds of years." "I do not live
through evil but through dedication to my Gods." "Where are your Gods now?" "Silenced by orders of Msieu Desmond. I
must obey your husband until his eyes are opened and he knows that you are
evil." says Raxl. "He will not
listen. I am in control of Jean Paul. He is mine." "The time will come when he will listen
to me Madam. He will know what you have done." "He will not." "He will know that you have designs on
that young girl Holly. That you wish to possess her youth, destroy her." Raxl
says to her. "Is that what I
want?" "That is the only way you
will live forever Madam. Through the spirit of youth. The others that you have
killed have only been in the way."
"You're a clever woman." says Erica. "And a powerful one. I have had battle
with Jacques Eloi Des Mondes before and I have won." Raxl tells her. "Not without your Gods. And now they are
silent." "Not by long Madam. Not
for long. I promise you." Raxl says then walks away. Erica watches her leave when she hears
the front door close. Turning she sees Quito carrying Matt's body. A sheet
covers him. "Oh Jean Paul!" Erica
cries out to him. He is walking behind Quito. "My darling it was terrible, like a
nightmare. He jumped to his death right in front of my eyes." Erica says rushing
to Jean Paul and leaning against him.
Jean Paul stands like a statue. "Take the body to the crypt Quito." Quito
carries Matt's body from the room.
"I tried to stop him. I even held his arm but he pulled himself away from
me and oh Jean Paul hold me." Jean
Paul steps away from Erica walking a few steps away. "Why? Why would he do such
a thing? He was a man of God. He believed in life and goodness. Why would he
take his life?" Jean Paul asks as Erica walks up to him. "Darling, he was a tortured man. He had
doubts about his God, his ministry. Terrible doubts. I've been trying to help
him." Jean Paul stares at
her, "Darling you saw him. He could
hardly force himself to say the prayers at Dan's grave. He had difficulty he
said praying at all. That was why I thought if he stood under the stars perhaps
the wonder of his God might be returned to him. Oh why did I take him up there?"
Erica starts to sob. "I killed him!" she cries out putting her arms around Jean
Paul's shoulders. Jean Paul hugs
her. "No darling no, don't say that. You didn't kill him. You were... trying to
help him. He was disturbed. He must have been." "Yes he was afraid he said. He was
afraid of losing his faith. He said he was being tortured by demons." Erica says
pulling back from Jean Paul. "His
faith was never stronger." Alison says walking into the room followed by Tim.
"And if there were demons they were not his." "Alison, what are you saying?" Erica
asks her sister. Alison walks over
to Erica and Jean Paul. Tim joins them. "I talked with him today. He was as
strong as any man could be in his belief in God." says Alison. "And I talked to him just before he
killed himself." Erica says. "I
don't think he killed himself." Tim say to them. "None of us do Erica." says Alison. Erica turns to Jean Paul. "But you do
don't you darling?" You believe the truth I told you?" Jean Paul doesn't answer. "Don't you darling?" Erica
asks.
Holly is sitting in her room brushing her hair. "Are you feeling
better mother?" Elizabeth is pacing
the floor. They are both dressed for bed. "I don't know how you can sit there
and be so calm. There is murder here." Elizabeth says walking up to Holly's
chair. "We don't know that." says
Holly. "Anyone with eyes could see
it. She is a murderess." "Jean Paul
doesn't think so." "Jean Paul is to
much in love with the memory of his dead wife to face the truth. Erica has
killed and will kill again." Elizabeth says as she starts to pace again. "I wish you wouldn't talk about Erica
that way mother." "Holly turn
around and look at me." Holly turns in her chair looking at her mother. "I don't
know what's happened to you but you're not yourself." says Elizabeth. "How would you like me to be?" Holly
asks. "Oh I don't know! I don't
know what Erica is doing to you!" Elizabeth says getting upset. "Holly will you
listen to me!" Holly is brushing
her hair. "Yes mother." "We've got
to leave this Island. I'm afraid for myself but I'm more afraid of what will
happen to you." Elizabeth says to Holly bending over her chair to get Holly’s
attention. "Nothing will happen to
me." Holly says with a smile. "Oh
my dear I'm afraid it already has." Elizabeth says running her hand over Holly's
hair. There is a knock at the door.
"Come in." Elizabeth calls. Jean
Paul enters and walks over to Elizabeth. "How are you feeling now?" "Not much better thank you." Elizabeth
tells him. "How is Erica?" Holly
asks. "She's very upset." says Jean
Paul. "I'm sure." says
Elizabeth. "She wanted to make sure
you were comfortable." "Well I am
not." Elizabeth tells him. Holly
stands. "I'm very sorry about Matt, really I am. But I'm sure Erica did her very
best to save him." Elizabeth and
Jean Paul look at Holly. "Holly will you go to my room and get my pills for me
like a dear. Because I won't be able to sleep." Elizabeth asks. Holly. "All right mother." Holly says then
leaves the room. Elizabeth turns to
Jean Paul. "Jean Paul you've got to let us leave Maljardin." Jean Paul turns away from her. "I'm
afraid that's impossible." "But you
must! I fear for Holly." Jean Paul
turns to Elizabeth. "Holly's been happy here. I haven't seen her more
content." "To content. She's not
like Holly at all. It's as if she were possessed." Elizabeth tells him. "That's nonsense." Jean Paul says
turning his back to Elizabeth.
"Please Jean Paul. I beg you as a mother. Let us go please!" Erica asks
holding Jean Paul's arm. "Elizabeth
your being ridiculous and emotional."
"I'm afraid. I'm afraid of what will happen to Holly and me Jean Paul."
She pulls on his arm so he turns to look at her. "If you care for Holly and I
know you do. Let her go. If not me at least Holly." "I'm very fond of Holly. But then so is
Erica." Elizabeth looks away from
Jean Paul.
In the lab Raxl is cleaning. Alison walks up to her. Taking her
arm she turns Raxl to face her. "Raxl, Erica lied tonight didn't she? Matt’s
death was no suicide." "The Master
has asked me not to speak of the Mistress to his guests." "I'm not a guest. I'm her sister. Would
Matt jump to his death? Did he seem like a man who would take his own
life?" "No." says Raxl. "Then why won't you tell me what I'm
asking you?" asks Alison. "I'm not
to speak of the Master's wife." says Raxl.
Alison turns away from Raxl. "Did you know Matt thought my sister was
evil? Did you know that he was determined to fight the evil by exorcising the
demons he thought possessed her?"
"I know." Raxl says lowering her head. "Well I think he confronted her. I think
he upset her so profoundly, made her so afraid that she pushed him to his
death." Alison says. Raxl looks up
at Alison, then away. "I don't
think my sister’s evil Raxl. I think she suffered some biochemical changes which
have affected her mind. I think she's mad Raxl. And you must help me find a way
to stop her." "I am doing all in my
power. But I must depend on my Gods and my ancestors. If they will not act for
me then I fear for all of us." says Raxl turning to
Alison.
In her bedroom Erica is posing as Tim works on another sketch. "I
can't pose any more today." Erica tells Tim. Tim stops drawing and sighs. "I'm so disturbed about Matt." says
Erica. Tim looks at her then
angrily sketches. "I did tell you
didn't I Tim, how I tried to help him."
"Yes, you told me." Tim says not looking at Erica. "You knew didn't you what a disturbed
and unhappy man he was." says Erica.
Tim grabs and shoves the easel.
"Tim?" Tim rips the sketch
off the easel. Jean Paul walks through the door. "Another failure?" he asks
Tim. "Yes!" Tim says angrily and
throws it on the floor after crumpling it in his hand. "I'd like to see it." says Jean Paul
reaching for it. Tim steps on
it. Jean Paul straightens up and
looks at Tim. "Jean Paul I told you
I didn't want the portrait painted."
Erica says to him. "Poor Tim he's trying to do the best he can. Let's
forget the portrait shall we." Jean
Paul looks at Tim. "You were paid for an assignment." "Yes I was." Tim answers. "Then complete it." says Jean Paul. "All right if you insist. But not
today." "Good not today." Erica
says standing and walking to Jean Paul.
"Because today, every time I sketch her I see her face as it must of
looked just before Matt fell to his death.' Tim says looking at Erica. Erica slaps his face. Jean Paul turns
and looks at Erica. Turning to Tim.
"You will apologize to my wife."
"Shouldn't she apologize to me?" says Tim angrily. "I am sorry Tim. But the terrible things
you said. I was shocked. I'm tired and confused. We all are." Erica says to Tim
then looks at Jean Paul. "He didn't know what he was saying. Did you Tim?" Tim looks at Erica. "No I didn't know
what I was saying." "You see." says
Erica. "I want to leave this Island
Jean Paul. I don't think I can finish Erica's portrait. I don't think I can
paint at all. I know you've been very generous to me and I appreciate it and
I'll try to repay you. But I've got to get off this Island! For the sake of my
sanity!" "What a pretty little
speech. You are to be very touched Jean Paul. I think perhaps we should let Tim
go ashore." Erica says. "With
Holly." Tim says. "I didn't hear
that part of your pretty speech. Did you Jean Paul? Jean Paul?" Erica calls out
to him. Jean Paul is standing
staring at Erica. "Let him go, the portrait doesn't matter." Jean Paul says then
he walks out of the room. "Not
without Holly." Tim says. "Instead
of making demands I think you should accept .what has been offered to you." "I'm not going without Holly." Tim
repeats. "That's your decision,
because Holly will stay. Take my word for it, and if you then choose to stay
with her I suggest you and I start again, tomorrow on the portrait." Erica says
to him. Tim opens his mouth to
speak but Erica says. "I don't see any other way. Do you?" Tim doesn't answer. "And if you can't portray me as I am, as
you see me now. I can't be responsible for the consequences."
Raxl is walking through the Great Hall when Jean Paul walks down
the staircase. "Raxl? " Raxl stops.
"Yes Master?" "I want to know what
the guests are saying about my wife and the minister’s death?" "It is no secret what they are thinking.
But I have obeyed your command. I do not speak to them of your wife." says
Raxl. "I want her to be loved!"
Jean Paul shouts. "Do they love her?"
"Her sister loves her." "And
the others?" "They do not love
her." says Raxl. "I see." Raxl turns to Jean Paul. "Master, give
me permission to invoke my powers again. Oh for centuries, for generations they
have been used when there was trouble on this Island. When ever a Desmond was in
danger. They are there for their protection. Oh give me the freedom to use them
again. To command the Gods to protect us."
"And to destroy my wife?" says Jean Paul. "The Gods act on our behalf." "I don't trust you Raxl." "How often have I proved my devotion to
the Desmonds?" Raxl cries out to him.
"Always." says Jean Paul.
"Then Master?" Jean Paul
nods. "Petition your Gods, but leave Erica alone." "Thank you Master." Raxl says as she
bows to him then leaves the room.
Jean Paul walks through the Great Hall. "Jacques, our bargain was
to mean happiness and now I challenge you again. Stop whatever it is that you
are doing. You brought Erica back to me but please, please don't destroy her in
my eyes." Jacques laughs at Jean
Paul. Jean Paul covers his face with his fists almost in
tears.
Quito is in the crypt opening an empty coffin when Raxl comes down
the stairs. "Quito, it is not your duty to mourn the dead. It is the living we
must think of. The girl Quito, have you thought of the young girl who has been
so good to you?" Quito nods. "Oh we have work to do, you and I. I
have been given permission to invoke my powers to the Gods. We must act Quito
before it is to late. The young girl is in danger." says Raxl.
Holly is walking down the staircase to the Great Hall. Seeing Jean
Paul she smiles. "Good morning my
dear girl.' Jean Paul says. "Good
morning my dear man." Holly says then kisses Jean Paul's forehead. "You don't seem disturbed this morning."
says Jean Paul. "Why should I be?"
Holly asks smiling. "Erica and I made plans for the day. First of all she's
going to teach me how to sew. Then we're going to have a picnic along the cliff.
Oh Jean Paul, I'm so happy." Jean
Paul smiles and pats her hand. "Oh I'm glad. Glad that you like her. That's the
way I wanted it to be." He helps her down the rest of the stairs. "But Holly, do
you think a picnic on the cliff today would be a good idea?" Jean Paul asks
holding Holly's hand. "But why
not?" Jean Paul turns away from
Holly. "Well, Matt is dead and..."
"Oh yes, I wasn't thinking."
"Well don't feel guilty. You know you're the most innocent and nice young
girl I've ever met." "Actually it
was Erica who thought about the picnic. She must have forgotten." says
Holly. Jean Paul stares at Holly.
"Yes, yes she's not been herself."
"I suppose if I stood and tried to stop someone from throwing themselves
off the tower I couldn't bear it." Holly says turning away from Jean Paul. "But
Erica is so brave. You do love her Jean Paul, don't you? Very Much?" "Yes I do." Jean Paul answers. "I'm so glad, but you'll have to tell
her about the picnic. You see sometimes when I don't follow Erica's plans she
gets so irritated with me. Not that I blame her, I suppose I'm ungrateful." Jean Paul has listened to Holly in
silence watching her. "No don't worry. I'll explain everything." Jean Paul tells
her. Holly looks away with a smile.
"I can't bear to make her sad, she's so kind to me. I’d do anything for her Jean
Paul. Anything she asked me. I'd die for her Jean Paul. I would." Jean Paul looks at Holly.
Quito and Raxl enter the Sacred Temple. We will call on the
spirits and ask them to use all powers to conquer all the evil on Maljardin. She
shall see who is the most powerful." says Raxl. Walking into the Temple Raxl is shocked.
"Quito! It has been destroyed! No, no it has been desecrated!" Raxl cries out.
"Oh the symbol of the Great Serpent is gone! We are destroyed Quito!
Destroyed!"
In her bedroom Erica holds the Serpent's Staff, then laughs. "What
has happened to your powers now Raxl?" she says as she breaks the Staff. She
stands and laughs.
