Maljardin, as the sun drops to the swirling seas that surround the
Island, darkness lowers over the doomed mansion. Jean
Paul, the Master reunited with his beloved Erica can almost believe evil has
been banished. But one man suspecting Erica herself
of being a force of evil attempts to leave the Island and free himself of the
curse of Maljardin.”
Dan is in the boathouse untying the boat. He hears someone and
glances up. Alison walks through the doorway. She closes the door as Dan stands.
Alison rushes to him, Dan grabs her into his arms as Alison hugs him. "Are you sure nobody saw you coming down
to the boathouse?" Dan asks. Yes.
They are all dressing for dinner, I'm sure nobody saw me." "What about Quito?" "Quito, he was at the back of the house
gathering wood. I know he didn't see me."
"Good, I'm as sure he'd kill me as see me set off in this boat." Dan
tells her. "Dan I just had to say
goodbye. Regardless of the risk..." Alison says. She's getting upset. "What is it?" "I just have this terrible feeling that
I'm never going to see you again." Alison tells him. "You will. I'm just going to get help
that's all." He says cupping Alison's face in his hand. "Who can help us?" "Someone with the knowledge of the
occult." "Look what happened to
Vangie, She's the conjure Woman and she's dead , buried on Maljardin as she
predicted. Who can fight against the devil! That's the force Jean Paul is
dealing with now." Alison says turning away. "Listen Alison, you mustn't believe
that." "I think I do." she says
looking up at Dan. "Listen Alison,
Jean Paul is a madman but he's vulnerable. He's got to be. I'm going to find
someone to drive him away from this madness." "Dan is the boat ready?" Tim asks
rushing over to Dan. He moves to the door keeping guard. "I hate to leave you now." Dan says to
Alison. "Then stay." "I can't." "What if your unable to cross the
channel?" "I've studied the tides.
I can make it." "Dan you've got to
hurry up. The timing has to be exact with the tide.: Tim says to him. Dan takes a hold of Alison's hand. "Take
care of yourself. Try to keep the others calm until I come back." "Dan you've got to come back." Alison
says holding him. "I will. I
couldn't let anything happen to you."
"Dan?" Tim hushes them. "Listen." They hear footsteps as Quito walks
towards the boathouse. The three of them hide themselves in the boathouse. Quito enters, he looks around. Setting
down the lantern he is carrying he starts chaining and locking the boat. "What's he doing?" asks Dan. "Locking the mooring chains." says Tim.
They watch as Quito secures the boat. When he is done he picks up the lantern
then he looks around again. Seeing nothing he leaves the boathouse. Alison, Tim and Dan leave their hiding
places. "Dan the tides?" Alison says holding Dan's hand. "The currants are running swiftly now
but if I wait, the ebb tide gets slower then the whirlpool slows down." "But will it be safe?" Alison asks. "I can't wait for the tide again. I have
to go now." Oh Dan," Alison
says worriedly. "What are you going
to do about the locks that Quito put on?" Tim asks. "Try to pry them loose. Alison I want
you to go back to the house now." Dan says taking her hands. "No, I won't go until I see you safe on
the other side." "It's getting dark
you won't be able to see. Besides they will miss me at the table. I want you to
cover for me." "I will." Alison
says then reaches up and kisses him. "Oh Dan!" she cries. "Alison I want you to know I love
you." "I love you, be careful and
come back to me." "I will. I don't
want anything to happen to you now. Go on now." says Dan. Alison hugs him and
leaves. Dan watches as she heads
towards the house. "I've broken
one." Tim tells Dan. He's kneeling down next to the boat. "All right I'll help with the other one
then I want you to go back to the house." Dan says kneeling next to Tim. "Dan I want to go with you." Tim says
looking at Dan. "There's no use
risking two lives. Besides you'll want to take care of Alison now and Holly."
Dan says working on the chains and locks.
"She doesn't even know I'm alive."
"She's beginning to notice. There.' Dan breaks the chain. "Now
scoot." "Take care Dan." "An old sailor like me. I'll navigate
like Christopher Columbus." "He
missed the Mainland. Goodbye Dan. Good luck." Tim says then leaves the
boathouse. Dan climbs aboard the
boat.
In the Dining Room Raxl lights the candelabra and places it in the
center of the table. She straightens the place settings. Jean Paul walks in. "Ah another
sparkling evening on Maljardin. Darling, come and see what Raxl has done." Jean
Paul turns and calls to Erica. Erica walks in. "I don't think I have seen the
table more magnificent." "Thank you
Msieu." Raxl says to him. Erica
looks at the table. "The candles."
"Yes aren't they lovely?" Jean Paul says to Erica. "We will not have candles." "But darling, they'll set off your
beauty." Jean Paul says to her.
"Raxl I told you no candles." Erica says to her. "Put them out." Raxl stands and stares at her. "I said put out the flames now. Jean
Paul?" Erica turns to him. Raxl is
still standing in one place. "But
Erica?" "Take them away! Now!"
Erica cries out. Jean Paul walks
over to her and puts his arm around her. "Snuff out the candles Raxl." "What ever the Master says." Raxl
replies as she puts the candles out.
"And you will remove the candelabra. We won't be using it anymore. And
have Quito put out the fire in the fireplace." Erica says to Raxl. Jean Paul looks at Erica. "But darling
it's so warm, the atmosphere." "Far
to warm darling." "All right Quito
will put it out." Jean Paul tells her clasping her hand between both of
his. "Quito is inspecting the
Island." Raxl says to jean Paul.
"Then I shan't stay here until the fire is out." Erica says pulling away
from Jean Paul. Jean Paul rushes
after her and holds her by the shoulders. "Darling don't be upset. It's all
right, you're right you know. No candles, no fire, it wouldn't be fair to the
flames." Jean Paul tells her with a smile. "Your radiance would put them to
shame." Jean Paul says then kisses her forehead Erica turns and looks up at
him. "Master?" Raxl calls out to
Jean Paul. "I'll dowse the fire
myself." Jean Paul tells Erica then walks away from her. Erica watches him leave
then steps away. "What is it?" Jean
Paul asks Raxl. "It is before
your eyes." says Raxl. "Oh don't
talk to me in riddles." "It is the
Madam." But what about the
Madam?" "Open your eyes Master.
Observe her. Watch closely what she does."
"I do watch her Raxl. I haven't taken my eyes off her since she's come
back." Jean Paul turns and looks over at Erica with a smile "Isn't she lovely?
Lovelier than ever before." He says turning back towards Raxl. "And she has never been so different
before." "What do you mean?" "Here me and hear me well. I am afraid
for you Master. From the moment she arrived here I sensed wickedness, death.
Your death Master." Jean Paul looks
away.
Holly and Elizabeth are in Holly's room. Holly is checking her
dress in the mirror. Elizabeth is
sitting on the edge of the bed. "I know Holly that you and I have never been
overly affectionate. But I am none the less your mother." "Yes Mother." replies Holly. "And it hurts. You don't know how much
when you ignore your own Mother for Erica." "What hurts most your pride?"
Holly says to her. " I admit it. I
am a woman who is very proud and possessive and sharp." Elizabeth says standing,
then walking over to Holly. "To sharp with you sometimes. But there is something
else." Elizabeth puts her hands on Holly's shoulders. "No matter what we've done
to each other I do love you Holly."
"Me! You love a very large sum of money." Holly says as she pulls away
and walks across the room.” The inheritance I will soon come into." "Don't be cruel." Elizabeth says. Holly turns. "Cruel? I'm not being cruel
I'm just being realistic." Holly walks across the room and sits at the dressing
table. "Have you seen the necklace that Erica gave me?" "I didn't know she had." "Well she did. She brought it down this
morning. Here it is." Holly takes it out of a jewelry case. "Will you clasp them
for me?" She turns and asks her Mother.
"I will not and I want you to return it to Erica!" "Okay then I'll put it on myself." Holly
says turning away from Elizabeth.
"I said return it. She has no right giving you expensive gifts. Why? Why
would she do such a thing?" "She's
bored with pearls she told me so." Holly says fastening the necklace. "Besides
maybe she likes me. But you'd deny that.. maybe she likes me the way Jean Paul
does, as a daughter. "How can you
say that?" "Because you're
jealous." says Holly. "Believe me
Holly I'm not jealous ." Elizabeth walks over to the bed and turns towards
Holly. "I'm afraid. Something about that woman makes my blood run cold when I'm
with her. And when your with her I tremble as if your in a cage with a deadly
snake." Elizabeth sits on the edge of the bed. Holly stands and rushes away
across the room. "Holly?" Elizabeth
calls to Holly. She also stands up.
"Mother, Erica is the most wonderful and lovely person I have ever met,
and I'd follow her to the deepest pit in hell." Holly says then walks from the
room. Elizabeth sits on the bed
with a worried _expression.
Erica is in the Great Hall sitting on the couch when Matt walks
in. "Ah Reverend. How very humble I feel when I'm in the presence of a man of
God. I hope your in peace on Maljardin? Although my husband tells me you've had
inner struggles with your faith. Nothing diabolical I hope?" Erica says holding
her hand out to him. Matt takes
Erica's hand. "I think most of us have had inner struggles with the devil,
whether we acknowledge it or not."
"How interesting." Erica says standing up. "We must discuss this you and
I." "Yes, I would very much like to
talk to you. I have some questions."
"Questions?" Looking up Erica sees Jean Paul and walks over to him. "Oh
Jean Paul where are the others?"
Jean Paul takes Erica's hands in his. "I believe the ladies are vying
with you trying to look the most beautiful." Matt turns and watches Erica. "Hardly a match I would say, hey
Reverend?" Jean Paul looks at Matt.
Matt walks over to them. "I think that every woman has her individual and
therefore unmatchable charms."
Erica turns to him. "Beware Reverend you'll make me believe you do have
an eye for the ladies." "Madam I
assure you." Matt says starting to get upset. "Ah here's Holly. Oh my dear child you
do look luminous." Jean Paul says as he kisses Holly's hand when she comes to
the bottom of the staircase. "If I
do it's because of the necklace Erica gave me. How do you like it? Does it look
good on me?" Holly asks turning to Erica.
"If I were a pearl I would select you as my perfect setting." Erica says
kissing Holly on the cheek. She then takes Holly's hand and leads her a few
steps from Matt and Jean Paul. "Divine don't you think so Reverend?" Holly curtsies in front of Matt. "You see I had a marvelous pearl that
Jean Paul gave me but it's been lost and since I've had an aversion to pearls.
For me that is. I feel that someone far younger and worthier than I should wear
them." Erica glances at Holly then looks up the staircase. "Oh Elizabeth we've
just been saying that my pearls do suit your daughter." Erica says as she walks
to the bottom of the staircase.
Elizabeth meets her at the bottom of the stairs. "Erica, I think you
shouldn't have." "Where are the
others? I can't bear delays." Erica says turning away from Elizabeth. "I'm afraid I've spoiled her. Which is
my intention." says Jean Paul.
Elizabeth steps down from the staircase. "Erica, I want to talk to
you." Alison walks in. "Alison you've arrived. But dear your
dress is all wet." Erica says walking over to her. "I've been walking along the shore with
Dan. He's upstairs changing his cloths. A great wave broke and got us wet." "The tides of Maljardin are
unpredictable." says Erica. "And Tim?"
"Yes. Where is Tim?" Jean Paul asks. "Ah here." Tim says as he walks in the
room from the other doorway. "Oh
and also wet. You've left a trail of water." Erica points to the floor. "The
beach have been most populated this evening." says Erica. She sees Raxl. "Raxl
go to Mr. Forrest's room and tell him we miss him desperately." "I have looked Madam. He's not in his
room." "You will excuse me." Erica
rushes up the staircase. "Darling
why are you so upset?" Jean Paul stops Erica on the staircase. 'Dan is trying to leave the Island. I
feel it. I know. Jean Paul he must be stopped. If you want me with you he must
not escape.'
Jean Paul rushes outside to the boathouse. He is carrying a
flashlight in his hand. He finds the broken chain. "You fool!" he cries out.
"Dan, Dan! come back!" Jean Paul shouts. Turning he calls out the door of the
boathouse. "Quito, Quito!" he shouts. Quito walks into the boathouse. "Quito
he's taken the boat. The moon has gone behind the clouds. I can't see. I can
barely see out there. Dan! Quito we've got to stop him. We've got to try Quito!
He will be drowned! Dan come back!" Jean Paul tries looking across the
water.
Holly walks to Erica's bedroom door and knocks. "Erica? It's me
Holly. Please let me in. Erica I can't bear to see you so upset. I want to help.
Please let me come in." "Holly come
away." Elizabeth says as she walks up to Holly. "I command you leave that woman
alone. She's wicked can't you see." Elizabeth says grabbing Holly's arm. "Get away from me." Holly says pulling
away. "She wants us all in her
power that's all she wants. You and everyone else." Holly turns and knocks on the door.
"Erica! Please open the door."
Erica is standing at the window looking out. She drops the curtain
angrily. "Erica please let me in."
says Holly. "I'm alright Holly.
Just let me rest for a little." says Erica. "Are you sure?" "Yes just a while. Just a little
while." Erica says then walks over
to the bed holding the bedpost. Slowly she turns and walks over to the dresser.
She grips a large gold bowl.
Jean Paul is waving the light. "Dan! Dan come back! You'll drown
no one should cross that channel alone! Can you see me? The moon is coming out,
I can see him." He tells Quito. "Oh no, the tides are turning back against him.
The boats being thrown back, it's being forced back Quito. He's going to be
drawn to the whirlpool. Quito you've got to stop him. Look, go into the water.
You've got to try Quito." Quito
shakes his head no. "Dan!" Jean
Paul looks at Quito. "Try to reach him now!" Again Quito shakes his head no.
"Quito I command you!" Jean Paul shouts at him. Again Quito shakes his head
no. "Quito obey." Raxl tells him as
she walks up to Jean Paul and Quito. Quito looks at her then nods. "Go Quito, go!" Jean Paul says. Quito takes off his vest then gets into
the water. With a jump he splashes Jean Paul and Raxl. "He should have not crossed the water
because it means death." says Raxl.
Erica is forming a small boat from paper. She had filled the gold
bowl with water. Erica places the boat on the water, then with her finger she
starts circling the boat in the water until the boat is turning around with the
waters movement. Then turning the boat on its side she pushes it under the
water.
Alison is pacing back and forth in the Great Hall while Tim stands
on the bottom of the staircase. Alison rushes over to him. "Tim, I can't wait. I
can't wait any longer!" she cries out. "I've got to find out if he got away
safely." "I'll go down to the
boathouse with you. Come on." Tim says putting his arm around Alison's waist. As
they walk to the door the door opens and Jean Paul walks in. Quito is behind him
carrying Dan's body. "Dan!" "He's dead Alison." says Jean Paul. "Oh no! No Dan!." Alison says sobbing
touching Dan's hair. Erica walks
down the staircase with a smile. Making her face sad she walks over to Alison.
"Oh darling I'm sorry. So, so sorry. None of you must try to cross the channel.
I've tried to warn you. None of you must try to leave." she says holding
Alison. "Madam?" Raxl calls out.
Erica turns. In Raxl's hands is the gold bowl from Erica's bedroom. "For you
Madam from your chambers." Raxl reaches into the bowl and lifts up the
boat.
