Sheila and Alan Bonham have been breeding pedigree cats for 15  years, and are well known in New Zealand for their Ramaltal prefix under which they bred beautiful Siamese and Oriental Shorthairs.  In 1995 they commenced breeding Scottish Folds and gained the new prefix of Brackenburn, and in 1998 when offered to continue the breeding of Russian Blues by their friend Annie Ashcraft they took on the new prefix of Kirov.  Day by day their passion and love for the Russian Blue grew and today they are phasing out of Scottish Folds to envelop the Russians only.

There are many legends and tales that abound as to how the Russian Blue came to be.  The one favoured by most breeders (and perhaps the most romantic) was that they were cleverly hand crafted by Mother Nature herself.  Because they originated from the Baltic Region this required survival in the coldest of climates.  This called for a double coat to keep the skin dry, silver tipped for camoflage in the snow.  Deep set eyes to withstand cruel and cold gusts of wind, strong powerful shoulders and hindquarters with which to leap and bound through snowdrifts, strong powerful jaws which which he was able to catch and kill his prey, small upright ears to have the best of hearing to guard against predators.

Today the Russian Blue is largely unchanged to the original breed that was called the Archangel.  The Russian Blue first arrived in England due to being bartered for mutton by the Russian Sailors.
