| ================= WOOL REP FILLER ================= I have woven many wool rep rugs aver the years and have always used wool filler. The size if the filler is closely related to the size of the warp and the desired look of the finished rug. A lot of design fun can be had varying these qualities. Specifically a couple of good yarn size matches might be: 160yd/lb. wool warp with two or three strands of this as the heavy filler---670yd/lb. for the thin (this is very cushiony-the yarn showing when the thin shot is thrown must be a significant part of the design of the rug as it really shows. I find the thicker rugs good at 8' X 10' or larger. Smaller than 5' X 7' and they are more like having a flat pillow under foot.) 350yd/lb. warp with the 160yd/lb thick filler and 1200yd/lb as the thin works very well for any size rug. I don't know a thing about tradition of rep rugs or any "rules". I use mill end yarns and the good thing about using these yarns is constantly keeping in mind what is available when designing and planning the rug. You can have a lot of fun experimenting with different size yarn combinations! The looks are all different. Just be careful that the rug construction is sound. Krys, in N. MI |
