>> Could someone please explain to me or tell me where I can get directions to make a rag rug with a picture inlay?  I have a wallpaper border that I would like to copy onto fabric and inlay this "fabric border" in the border of the rug. (?) I have seen rugs that have an inlay from a purchased fabric border but I have been unable to find any weaving books that have instructions on how to do this.
Thanks for your help.

I printed the picture/graphic on transfer paper.  The picture is cut into strips to match the ppi of the rug you're weaving.  Throw a pick and beat it in, then open the same shed, pull the weft out slightly, lay the strip on top of it, close the shed and pull it into position.

I put a picture inlay on a rug this past year and for the most part proceded as Robin described.  In addition, I allowed an inch extra material on the width of the transfered picture.  When I cut the picture into strips, I did not cut all the way across; leaving the extra inch uncut.  This did two things for me.

  1) It kept the strips in order.
  2) It aided in aligning the picture strips.

Also, I found an awl handy in coaxing the strips into place over top of the weft.

Use iron on interfacing to stabilize the fabric.
