Hammett cloth beam crank handle

The Hammett crank handle is simple, here's the measurements:

The handle is a 1/4" by 1" steel bar, rounded at the end. Overall Handle length is 22". The axle hole is a loose 1/2" hole ( check your axle diameter to be sure ), it's 21-1/4" from the axle hole center to the rounded handle end. The axle hole is 3-3/4" from the pawl hole, center to center.

The pawl hole is a 1/4" hole ( I'd make it 5/16"). The pawl hole is 17-1/2" from the pawl hole center to the rounded handle end. The pawl is a simple hook shaped pawl, 1/2" thick, 2-1/4" long, measuring from the pawl hole center to the end of the hook. Assemble the pawl to the handle ( on the left side, looking down from the top), using a grade 5 or better yet a grade 8 , bolt ( better steel ).

I'd attach 1/4"  by  1" by 12" wooden sides to the crank handle with small bolts, nicely rounded & finished, for looks and comfort. I'd attach a spring or elastic to the handle to hold it in a handy horizontal position between cranks.

Now, using a yardstick, draw out the handle on butcher paper with the measurements written in and hand that to anyone with the equipment to cut steel and they should be able to make the handle for you, IF your Hammett is built the same as mine. My ratchet is a lttle under 5" across, the axle is 1/2" in diameter.

I'm weaving my second rug and am having an annoying problem. I can weave a couple of picks and then the next time I step on a treadle the "Keeper" (not sure what it's called) that holds the warp beam gear disengages and my whole warp goes slack. I can't figure out why this keeps happening (I have on the same warp as I did for the first rug - as well as
the same tie-ups and I never had this problem with the first rug.)  Any ideas?

There is a long spring attached to my Hammett that holds the warp beam dog, which is the gadget with the curved end that hooks into the ratchet (toothy edge) of the warp beam brake.  Check to see if the spring has come disconnected.  If it's disconnected, it won't hold the warp beam dog in the ratchet.

I also had this problem with my Hammet.  On mine, there was some "slop" between the back beam and the uprights and the warp beam would pull to one side or the other, causing the pawl to pop off the side of it.  I took off the warp beam (one side at a time) and found some old bearings and washers for spacers to take up the slack.  It took a little playing around with it to get the ratchet centered on the pawl so it wouldn't pop off the side.  It hasn't given me any trouble since then (about 30 rugs.)
