Tanya Vance Chat Transcript 09/27/02

SURVIVOR Host: Hi Tanya! Thanks for being here with us. Are you ready for some questions?

Survivor Tanya: Absolutely!

Visitor: I'm one of your fans that hated to see you go, but please tell us Tanya JUST HOW HARD WAS IT??

Survivor Tanya: It was very hard. The heat and humidity and of course with me suffering from dehydration it made it very difficult.

Visitor: Hi Tanya. First of all congrats on even making it on the show. I'd like to know if you were shocked that you were voted off, or were you expecting it?

Survivor Tanya: I was expecting it. I'd been warned a little bit by Brian and Helen.

Visitor: Hi Tanya, Why did u vote for Helen? I thought the vote should go for Jan she seemed to weigh you all down.

Survivor Tanya: Well, I knew that Ghandia was voting for helen and you know, with the dynamics of the show sometimes votes can hurt you. So, I also voted for Helen so no one else on the tribe would be jeopardized. Plus, I knew I was going.*laughs*

Visitor: Have your family been supportive of you being on Survivor?

Survivor Tanya: Definitely, they're very excited about it and they've been great

Visitor: Tanya, you said you didn't think it would be this rough, what were you expecting exactly?

Survivor Tanya: The Only thing that was rough was being dehydrated. I didn't expect things that were physically played difficult for me.

Visitor: Did you have any particular strategy going into the game?

Survivor Tanya: I wanted to fly low under the radar and I definitely wanted to make some alliances with someone...it didn't matter who but you want to make alliances with some of the stronger people on the team.

Visitor: Who did you consider making an alliance with?

Survivor Tanya: Brian and Ghandia and Jan.

Visitor: Tanya, what did you eat after you got booted fro the tribe?

Survivor Tanya: *laughs* I had Coca-Cola and some rice.

Visitor: Who was your favorite member of your tribe?

Survivor Tanya: Oh, gosh, that's a hard one...I like them all it's too hard to say. They're all great.

Visitor: What's with the tattoo Tanya, it rox!

Survivor Tanya: *laughs* Thank you! It's just something crazy I decided to do when I got out of college and it's a sun on the small of my back. My Mother hates it.*laughs*

Visitor: Did you train or anything before you went on the show?

Survivor Tanya: Yes, I did. I worked out and I did some running. I tried to practice some stuff like practicing a sling shot or with a bow and arrow just trying to get prepared.

Visitor: Tanya, what did you think of the Thai people and their surroundings being a social worker?

Survivor Tanya: Oh, it was veru gratifying to see the people in Thailand. It was also sad to realize all the child prostitution there. It was a very sad thing for me to see.

Visitor: Tanya was it exciting to be in Ewn York today? I have always wanted to visit there.

Survivor Tanya: It IS very exciting! I'm still here. This is my first visit here so I'm excited to see it a little bit more. I haven't gotten a chance to really see it yet.

Visitor: Do you think you would have done better on the Sook Jai tribe?

Survivor Tanya: I don't think that it mattered what team I was on. I think that being dehydrated that's really the reason I was voted off it wasn't because I was particularly on one tribe. I just think that being dehydrated hurt me.

Visitor: Tanya, from commericals for next week, did you even see any indications of the storm that is brewing between Ted and Ghandia?

Survivor Tanya: No, I did not. It was a surprise to me to see that on the promo.

Visitor: Hey Tanya, how would you describe a typical day in Thailand?

Survivor Tanya: Actually, it's very unpredictable. It's usually always over 100 degrees, the humidity is just horrible and you know, at any time a storm can brew and come and go. Plus, there's lots of misquitos and other ailments that you're constantly trying to be prepared for. Some spent time getting food and then others would get water and hten we also had down time to go in the ocean or to play golf.

Visitor: If Playboy gave you an offer, would you take it?

Survivor Tanya: I don't think I would. I work with sexually abused children so I don't reall want to contribute to that industry.

Visitor: Hi Tanya, is it true that you were sick even before your arrival on the island?

Survivor Tanya: Yes, It's true. On the airplane I got sick and the couple days before the show started when we were going through training I wasn't feeling 100%.

Visitor: what do you think of the show last night when it showed Helen struggling with the water containers and Jan was just relaxing in the water?

Survivor Tanya:*laughs* I thought it was funny. I wasn't there, you know when they went to get water but it was funny to see how frustrated Helen got and it paints a picture thats shiws just how being relaxed can cause animosity.

Visitor: While watching yourself on TV, do you feel like you were portrayed accuretly?

Survivor Tanya: Yeah, I actually do. I was pretty pleased that I was portrayed the way I am. Of course, in normal life I'm not sick but that's just something off the wall that happened. Other then that, that's pretty much who I am.

Visitor: Tanya, did it bother you that so much footage of you vomitting was shown?

Survivor Tanya: *laughs* It was pretty embrassing but it was an accurate display of what happened. Pretty gross for the viewers.

Visitor: How often did you see the monkey and did you give it a name?

Survivor Tanya: We saw it, gosh, pretty much daily and we called it Magilla...Magilla the Monkey!

Visitor: How much food did you really get to eat each day?

Survivor Tanya: It varied. Day one we caught a lot of crab, as well as day two. Day three we had a challenge so it was too late at night to look for food. Any days that we had a challenge food was limited because you didn't get back in time to look for it.

Visitor: Did anyone get upset during the race for the fishing lines, since few were guided into a pole or tree?

Survivor Tanya: Absolutely! *laughs* And I would have too! But it was just really hard to watch everybody's steps and make sure that they didn't run into anything but I do think couple of people were upset that they had but not too upset to say anything you could just tell that they were frustrated. It was crazy!

Visitor: What was the best memory of your time on the island?

Survivor Tanya: Probably singing with the rest of the group and having the monkey come down...Magilla *laughs*...Magilla coming down looking like he was going to join us. That was a lot of fun.

Visitor: Tanya, you were one of my favorite survivors this season. I thought your personality added a lot to your tribe. Now that you are watching the episodes, do you think you would have had a better chance with the other tribe?

Survivor Tanya: I don't know...I mean, they have a lot of strong personalities over there so it appears by watching on TV. But you know you just can't predict what might have happened if I'd been over there. You know, I would have had the same strategy...try to lay low under the radar.

Visitor: Welcome Tanya! What made you decide to try out for Survivor?

Survivor Tanya: Just by watching other Survivor series. I thought it looked so fun and I'm very competitive so I thought the whole experience would be something and rewarding so that's why I tried out for it.

Visitor: Tanya was there anyone there that rubbed you the wrong way? That you couldn't see yourself liking down the road?

Survivor Tanya: No, I didn't experience anyone who rubbed me the wrong way. I think if I'd been there longer that might have happened but fortunately for me I left ona good note.

Visitor: Tanya, what were your thoughts about sharing the cave with bats? Did the bats bother you?

Survivor Tanya: The bats...you never really saw them that often and you know, eventually you just don't even notice that they're there so I didn't have a problem with that.

Visitor: What was more difficult sleeping arrangements or eating?

Survivor Tanya: I was actually not craving food at the time so I'd probably have to go with sleeping.

Visitor: Tanya, can you tell us just how long the process of applying to get on Surivor took?

Survivor Tanya: Basically, I only applied one time so it just took probably not even 30 mintues to fill out an application and then I spent about 3 or 4 days just making a video. And then if they pick your application then it takes about two months to finish the interview process.

Visitor: Hi Tanya...Did you think Ghandia was flirting with Ted?

Survivor Tanya: Absolutely not. *luaghs* I never got that impression while I was on the show.

Visitor: what was on your video?

Survivor Tanya: I had several things on my video...me just telling a little about who I am, I dyed some Raman noodles and said "You have to be willing to eat anything!" I just tried to be funny and do things to try to catch the person's who watching the tape eyes.

Visitor: Hello from the Sotuhwest, Tanya! It seemed like Helen was rather abrasive. Did she ever say anything to hurt your feelings?

Survivor Tanya: Never and Helen may come across as abrasive but she genuinely cares about people and she never said anything harmful to me and in facr really acted like a mother figured to me.

Visitor: Tanya, Jan seemed to appear to be doing less and less, do you think they should have kept you instead of her?

Survivor Tanya: That is a really hard question to answer because she did do a lot but you know, I think that their decision was to pick me so I could get help because I was almost faint-like.I think overall their decision was based on that.

Visitor: Looking back, would you rather have the camp that had easy water access vs. good shelter?

Survivor Tanya: That's also a hard question! I think the cave eas the better just because you could keep completely dry and it was just more comfortable. Plus, we didn't have to waste a lot of energy on building a shelter.

Visitor: Did you bring back any souvineers?

Survivor Tanya: Yes, actually I did. I got a couple braclets and some shirts.

Visitor: How did you feel when you met others for the first time?

Survivor Tanya: I really had not had the opportunity to meet all 16 contestants because going into the game you're not allowed to talk.

Visitor: Why did you choose a hair brush as your Luxury Item?

Survivor Tanya: Well, CBS instructs you to pick five things that you would like to take and then they actually pick the luxury item for you. I just wanted to try to keep up a good appearance on TV! Plus my other tribe members ended up enjoying it also.

Visitor: What are the other luxury items you had on your list of things to bring on the island?

Survivor Tanya: I had a pillow and a Tennessee State flag, a quilt I give out to kids I work with and a volleyball.

Visitor: Much of the animosity that existed on your tribe was only talked about privately to the camera, for example Ghandia's opinion of Helen. Was any of this tension recognized or talked about [out in the open]?

Survivor Tanya: Actually a few people would state their feelings about helen getting on their nerves so it was talked about a little bit...of course not in front of her!

Visitor: Would you attribute your tribe's two losses on the past episode to a lack of morale or because your tribe was not as strong physically as Sook Jai?

Survivor Tanya: Actually I would say neither of those. I think that the first loss was due to bad luck, Ghandia couldn't figure out the puzzle-- it had nothing to do with strength. The second one, we were neck and neck but Jan had a hard time finding where to unhooko the flower. So I don't think either one of those really are accurate statements.

Visitor: Tanya, there were snakes trails in the sand at your campsite. Did you ever see the really dangerous snakes close to camp?

Survivor Tanya: I do think one time that something stuck its head out of a hole amd I'm not really sure what that was but I did see a King Cobra after I was voted off and it was ten feet long...pretty scarey!

Visitor: Were there any strange foods you were craving while you were there?

Survivor Tanya: Yes, Chick-Fil-A and some chocolate!

Visitor: Did you have to take everything you brought to tribal council? Could you leave things for the tribe?

Survivor Tanya: You're told to to take everything to tribal council however I did leave my hairbrush behind.

Visitor: Whatwere your activities in Thailand after leaving the game?

Survivor Tanya: I got to go elephant trecking, kayaking, I did some cave excursions, went snorkeling and shopped at some night markets.

Visitor: Can you go into any details about anything that the caneras didn't catch during the 6 days you were there?

Survivor Tanya: How loud Ted and Clay's snoring was at night! It was very funny.

Visitor: Tanya, what do you miss most being on the island? if anything?

Survivor Tanya: Of course, having contact with your friends and family and knowing what was going on in the world while you were gone.

Visitor: Would you ever go on another reality TV show again?

Survivor Tanya: Yeah, I think it would be fun to go on another TV reality show. I think I'm too old for Road Rules but I would do something else. I would definitely be interested in that.

Visitor: What is the best lesson you learned from the experience?

Survivor Tanya: to drink plenty of water!!! *laughs* And also on a serious note that you should always try to do your best and that you can do whatever you want to do as long as you try.

Visitor: Were you getting sick of Helen's Navy Seal stuff?

Survivor Tanya: *laughs* I wasn't actually. I thought it was pretty interesting having a female involved with an all male crew so it was interresting to heat about her job and the men that she worked with. Also, I was proud of her supporting our country in the Navy.

Visitor: Are you glad that you left survivor before the "food" challenge?

Survivor Tanya: *laughs* Definitely!!! No question about that one! I was very worried that the second challenge was going to be a food challenge.

Visitor: Would you say you entered Survivor for the money or for the experience you would gain?

Survivor Tanya: To me I think it was both. I think definitely the money is what makes you attracted to the game but I think also love to compete so that was also part of the fun for me.

Visitor: What are your plans after Survivor?

Survivor Tanya: I'm going to go back to my job in Tennessee as a social worker and if some offers come up I'll definitely consider doing some other stuff.

Visitor: Are you lookig forward to going on Howard Stern Show?

Survivor Tanya: *laughs* I'm not sure that I'll be doing that yet, but yeah, I think that would be fun.

Visitor: How did you get off work for that long of a period?

Survivor Tanya: I took a leave of absence and there was a girl that filled in for me while I was gone.

Visitor: Tanya, do you think in Survivor that it it is more important to be mentally strong or physically strong?

Survivor Tanya: I think that really you nned to have both. Definitely a lot of mental challenges to the game: being aware of your behavior and try to constantly stay on everyone's good side but physically you have to be able to compete so I do think they're both important.

Visitor: Tanya- you're so sweet! Are you looking for a boyfriend?

Survivor Tanya: *laughs* Actually, no , I have one but thank you for saying that!

Visitor: Did you enjoy the challenges?

Survivor Tanya: The challenges were great. The people who create those are just very talented and they definitely push you mentally and physically which makes for a good game when you have both elements. I still think we should have won our first challenge!

Survivor Host: Well everyone, our time with Tanya is up. Tanya, thanks so much for taking time to chat with us today. Any final comments for the Survivor fans?

Survivor Tanya: Our audition tapes will be up on CBS.com effective tomorrow and I encourage you all to apply for the next Survivor. It's a great experience!!
