Take Me Back Home! Clash Of The Champions XIX
June 22, 1992
This was held down in Charleston, SC at the Citadel in the McAllister Fieldhouse. The fieldhouse has a long history of holding wrestling events dating back to the sixties. It was my first event there, and you could definitely get the feeling of old southern wrestling. There was a trophy case in the front before you went in. I had just moved to the beach, and this was one of my first events in South Carolina in over ten years since I was a smaller child. The events in Richmond that I grew up with in the 70's and 80's were arena shows. Very few of the shows I saw were ever held in old school conditions like a fieldhouse so there was definitely the old school electricity in the air of seeing a great card in such an intimate setting. A fun night of wrestling as I was treated to what I *think* might've been Benoit's debut in WCW. Don't *hold* me to it. But the card that evening contained the following matches:

Steiners D. Miguel Pere & El Borica
Rick Steamboat & Nikita Koloff D. Joe & Dean Malenko
Rick Rude & Steve Austin D. Marcus Alexander Bagwell & Tom Zenk
Steve WIlliams & Terry Gordy D. Larry O Dea Jr. & Sr.
Barry Windham & Dustin Rhodes D. Arn Anderson & Bobby Eaton
The Freebirds D. The Silver Kings
Brian Pillman & Jushin Liger D. Chris Benoit & Beef Wellington
Hiro Hase & Akira Nogami D. The Masked Headhunters

And in the semi-final match/main event:
Steve Williams & Terry Gordy Defeated The Steiners

Dustin Rhodes and Barry Windham. I was a bigger Arn Anderson Fan, but I remember being impressed with Dustin The Freebirds defeating the Silver Kings. Wow. Brian Pillman AND Jushin Liger Teaming up to defeat Chris Mother*f*in' Benoit and Beef Wellington. Pillman ruled back then and I was *such* a Jushin Liger mark at the time...

Come on...I was a HUGE Steiner mark. NOTE: I'm so otaku at the time that you'll notice I'm one of THE only people with a sign. Steiners baby. I remember this was a steiner return night. The night they wrestled was to be the first night in something like a year or so. They had come back to wrestle in the tournament and Jesse Ventura was the big announcer who got to introduce them again for the fans.
Great shot of the Steiners and Steve Williams. I just remember what stiff monsters Steve Williams and Terry Gordy were. There were almost EXACTLY the same characters as today's APA. Monster, stiff, huge brawlers who'll get the job done.

I did love Madusa at the time, I mean, come on, it's 1992, she's hot, and you *know* she'll go for the guy with the hot pink sign...right? Don't chicks dig signs? No? You sure? I swear on my life that the front of this sign says "Jesse for President". If I get my hands on a copy of the Clash, I'll know for sure, but I seem to remember that this was just after he'd been elected Mayor of his small town, and I had thought it'd be funny to promote higher aspirations on my sign. I wish I had a shot of the front of it. Then I'd know for sure.
