- Choose games for adults and children. Try to get everyone involved! The more outrageous, the better! (Keep the games safe and remember no running around the pool!) Some of the best games include: * Limbo Contests * Balloon Toss * "Money in the Pool" *
- Play a mixture of music to match the types of people at the party. For small children, it is OK to play Barney or Disney tunes from Pocahontas or The Lion King. Older kids through the college crowd like the current top hits from rock, rap and country. Adults tend to like the "oldies" of course, but some time tested songs are great for the entire crowd, like "The Twist" or "Old Time Rock and Roll."
- Food: remember to keep it simple! Finger foods work best. Pizza and chicken wings are at the top of the list, but other favorites include hamburgers, hot dogs, submarine sandwiches, and chips. A good suggestion is to serve a tray of fresh fruits or sliced veggies and dip also.
- Don't forget to have plenty of ice cold drinks on hand, as everyone is going to be hot! Keep the drinks in a cooler or a big tub with ice. If serving drinks over ice, remember to use plastic cups for safety around the pool. A healthier alternative to sodas is to provide fresh fruit drinks, such as lemonade or punch. If serving frozen drinks, remember to offer non-alcoholic versions as well for children or those who don't drink.
- Decorations can add to the atmosphere of the party. Try colorful beach balls, balloons, flowers and even hawaiian leis.
- Make sure someone is in charge of keeping an eye on the children in the pool ... if not a lifeguard, then use a designated adult chaperone.
- Invite everyone, especially the really fun people you know, and call them a day or two before the party to remind them what a great time they're going to have! Just a few suggestions: mention music /DJ, planned activities & FUN, and foods / beverages to be offered.
- If the guests at the party don't know each other, it's a good idea to use icebreaker games to get them to interact. Try dividing into groups and doing a scavenger hunt with items around the pool or the "name game".
- Give your party a theme! Just a few suggestions:
Make sure to use the theme on the invitations and the decorations for the party!
- Hawaiian
- Oldies Party
- Texas Bar-B-Que
- Have a backup plan in the event of bad weather! If rain threatens, either plan to move the party to an inside location, like a clubhouse or home, or put a rain out date on the party announcements ... usually the next day or the same day one week later.
